At Speculator copper mine near Butte 142 men died and 35 more were killed by a fire that spread to the adjoining Diamond mine. By nightfall 50 bodies were recovered and 148 men were still missing with no hope of survivors.
A hundred American navy aviators arrived in France, the first U S fighters to reach the country. They assess duties and await orders as they land on French soil on June 9.
London June 9. King George received General Pershing and his personal staff at Buckingham Palace. Balfour has arrived at a British port returning from the United States. A further contingent of American officers arrived on the same steamer with Balfour.
British forces attacked south of the Souchez river and entered German positions on a two mile front advancing over half a mile. Germans counter attacked along nearly the entire new front but were repulsed completely with heavy German losses, British holding all ground captured.

German prisoners report Alsace and Lorraine troops in the French army are watched closely and kept behind the lines. They may be withdrawn from the French front and sent to the Russian front amid rising desertion concerns. A Lorraine unit was said to be moved in closed wagons under armed escort from Vitry le Reims.
Associated Press reports Northern Pacific will employ women as car washers at its local passenger station and Parkwater shops. master mechanic T. J. Cutler says women replace transient laborers, perform better and are more dependable than men previously hired, with prior crews often failing to show up.
Prisoners from the New Mexico state penitentiary will be used to grow war crops of beans in the state. War department official Thomas Hughes arranged a convict camp here instead of road work. Five hundred acres have been donated for the bean crop, with two gasoline tractors and other farm machinery for cultivation.
Littleton Colorado votes to give every man joining the army or navy 15 from the town treasury aiming to boost patriotism. Fifteen recruits have joined so far as treasurer D M DeCamp notes the policy helps youths feel the town cares and can cover small costs for opportunities.
El Paso reports Mexican photographers surge as the consular order requires passport photos for all travelers to Mexico. Small photo shops have sprung up near the consulate, indicating a thriving trade created by the new rule.
Fort Bliss Texas June 9 The new army law banning soldiers and officers in uniform from buying liquor and prohibiting saloons near army posts led to the permanent closure of the Bucket of Blood, a famed border saloon named for its deadly barroom days.
Fruit growers of San Juan New Mexico receive 150 fruit evaporators to dry surplus fruit for war crops. A delegation traveled to Santa Fe to request the evaporators noting cannery expansion is blocked by tin and solder shortages.
In Montana, after a rancher was struck by illness, 26 neighbors raised crops on his 100 acre field. They plowed sowed flax and oats and provided tools and meals while he recovered. Men worked, women cooked, and the group shared news of his improving health.
