Convicts revolt razes buildings at Illinois state penitentiary

Associated Press report from Joliet says twelve hundred convicts at the Illinois state penitentiary revolted and set fire to the complex. Federal troops were called to quell the blaze. One convict was killed and six seriously injured as three military companies joined fire and police forces to suppress the uprising. Names of rioters and full details remained unclear.

City Council considers vacating street for new federal building

The council met to discuss vacating a street and part of an alley under a new state law to allow Cordova to erect a $100,000 federal building. An election will be held to vote on the street vacation as the building committee plans repairs to the public school and to add two rooms with a steam heating plant. Other topics include a dock font cost study, a sewer line extension to Fourth avenue, a revised dog ordinance, road funding for Eyak, and an eight mile per hour speed limit law awaiting final reading.

Carlisle Name New Cannery 7 Carlisle

The Carliste Packing Company received its new tender the Carlisle, brought to Cordova by Captain F. N. Glasscock of the Eclipse and turned over to J. J. Murray who will command. The Carlisle, 88 feet long with a 21 foot beam and 100 horsepower, carries 40 000 to 45 000 fish and has Delco lighting plus a private room for the cannery superintendent. It is a larger tender than the Cordova and is modern and up to date. Glasscock reports a pleasant trip north despite fog and heavy winds, taking less than ten days with stops at Ketchikan and Yakutat.

Wyoming Man Leads Drive for Woman Suffrage Monument

Gen eral J. C. Thompson of Cheyenne has started a movement to erect a monument honoring Wyoming its 1869 woman suffrage grant. The act, chapter 31 of 1869, allowed every woman 21 or older in the territory to vote, approved by John A Sampbell.

Mexican laborers return to solve mining labor shortage

Associated Press reports Mexican workers refuting fears of conscription are returning from the United States in large numbers to fill mining jobs in the district. Daily arrivals estimated at 500, with captains Rolfe and Lund en route to Cordova aboard a new coalwise vessel from Seattle. Seattle Faces Bone Dry Law Delay With Referendum

Seattle reports indicate referendum leaders have secured enough votes to block the bone dry law from taking effect next Thursday. Lawyers call the federal July 1 provision, which would ban liquor shipments, as the controlling factor for the state.
