President Wilon stated the government’s income for the current fiscal year would exceed expenditures and every effort is being made to achieve that. He cited a bright outlook for business resumption and noted that federal income should rise in the coming months above the past few months, despite the European war’s depressing effect.
The Pangma-Pacific Exposition will open its doors on Sunday January 2. Exhibits are being prepared for flawless opening day operations and to welcome the many visitors already in the city awaiting the event.
Among the arrivals in Cordova on today's train were J. H. Miles and A. W. Stevens mining men of Seward peninsula en route to the states. They traveled from Nome to Fairbanks with eight dogs in one month and one day. The bay was unfrozen, forcing a circuitous route around Norton Sound and delaying them several days. The mushers finished 55 miles from Minto to Fairbanks. Miles is manager of the Seward dredge on Salmon Creek and stayed to work the plant.
President Wilson nominated Charles I. Bunnell of Valdez Alaska for the fourth judicial division judgeship in Alaska. The vacancy has prompted urgent calls for swift Senate confirmation due to prisoners awaiting trial and heavy court workload. Bunnell a 36 year old Pennsylvanian and Bucknell alumnus built a large Valdez practice after arriving in Alaska in 1900 and gaining admission to the bar in 1908.
General Villa issued a signed statement from Mexico City warning that conspirators against the president will be treated severely. He said the country requires prudence and energetic action and announced plans to direct a campaign to move the capital to Tampico after addressing those threats.
A minister of marine report notes Sweden Norway Denmark and Holland lost twenty two ships valued at ten million dollars since the war began through floating mines set adrift by belligerents. He protests mine lanes endangering neutral and belligerent ships alike. London dispatch adds Britain lost fifty four foreign going ships in four months, with cargos valued at twenty nine million dollars.
President Wilson, referencing a State Department note to Great Britain, said Britain would pay large damages to owners of vessels and cargoes unlawfully seized and detained. He stressed the position applies to any neutral nation and rests on general principles of international law.
In a Washington interview President Wilson reiterates support for the Jones bill enabling ultimate independence for the Philippines once its people prove capable of stable governance. He says U S aims are to restore the islands to their people and not to retain them for power. He condemns exaggerated accounts of uprisings as aimed at defeating independence.
A wireless US cruiser report says seven thousand troops led by General Carranza at Tepic joined General Villa. No violence expected but foreign residents sought refuge aboard the Glacier in Tepic and nearby San Blas harbor. Peter Sherman to depart on the next Mariposa southbound, planning to stay in the United States to start a business.
Paris December 29 The government bulletin reports the loss of the French submarine Curie after it struck a defensive chain laid to protect the Austrian fleet. The vessel sank within minutes. all crew evacuated except one drowned. The survivors were captured by Austrian boats.
Paris reports say France is progressing in the drive to recover Alsace from Germany in 1870. Allies shell Mühlhausen and Steinbach in southern Alsace while northern Alsace is invested with lighter resistance.
Reports from London say Austria officially concedes Russian forces again occupy Carpathian passes. Austrian troops along the front from the Biala river to northwest of Dukla Pass retreat before the Russian advance, signaling a retreat of Austro-German forces in Galicia.
Petrograd says official bulletin reports heavy German losses after mass attacks on Russian positions in Poland. German regiments repeatedly charged trenches but were met by devastating fire and forced to retreat.
Arras France December 29 French troops attacked the German front along a line about twelve miles long near Lens north of Arras. They captured about half a mile of trenches and held the ground despite several German counterattacks. London reports both sides claiming slight advances with limited casualties in ongoing combat.
President Wilson stated there is no doubt the administrations legislative program including the shipping, reciprocity, and appropriations bills will pass with little opposition and before March 1 next year. He avoided stances on immigration while expressing personal opposition to the literary test provision.
A treasury department statement shows U S exports to foreign countries in the first twenty five days of December exceeded imports by eighty eight million dollars. A large portion of exports went to the warring nations of Europe.
Kantishna journalist C. P. Ingersoll reports fox farming thriving as former miners switch to fur bearing animals. Many valuable foxes exist, but owners delay transfers due to risk until warmer weather. Ingersoll extols Kantishna as ideal to live in with summer sights of gardens and flowers in the wilderness.
