News from Berlin and multiple capitals report Germany proposing an immediate peace conference among belligerents following President Wilson’s note. Other dispatches note Wilson’s praise, Belgian deportation concerns, and ongoing battles in Romania and Dobrudja as Allied and Central powers exchange views on a broader peace movement.
Logan Billingsley head of alleged liquor importing syndicate indicted last week arrested at San Francisco arrived in Seattle. Unable to furnish a $13,500 bond he spent Christmas in county jail. He claimed liquor shipped from San Francisco to Alaska addressed to Seattle firms and controlled by them, but it was sold here and not sent to Alaska.
After Torreon victory Villa and his men move eastward planning an attack on Monterey in Mexico. The report notes the force’s movements toward Montrey from Torreon as they press operations in the region.
The Alaska Steamship Company will place the steamship Santa Ana on the Seward Bethel route starting May. It will sail May 20 from Seattle to Bethel then Seward and begin regular service. Dora may also operate if business warrants, with a Kuoko river service from late May to August and monthly round voyages. The Santa Ana will have new boilers and will operate as a freighter on Seattle Southeastern Alaska routes until next May.
In Copenhagen on December 23 the king and cabinet ratified the treaty selling the Danish West Indies to the United States, confirming the transfer of sovereignty and ownership to the American government.
Seattle on Christmas enjoyed the finest weather in years. Destitution was less than usual as benevolent people and organizations aided the needy. Church choirs sang carols on streets after dark, while downtown hotels fully booked due to broad prosperity and high demand for rooms.
W. B. Hancock says the Mother Lode company is staffing up to mine and ship copper ore. Thirty four carloads sit at the lower tunnel ready for McCarthy, with eight more cars en route to the smelter. A planned 13.5 mile trail to McCarthy, cost 25 to 30 thousand dollars, plus a hydro plant, rail, new offices, bank and mess houses will support the operation. An Empress theatre program drew a large audience last night and will be repeated tonight.
Cordova celebrated Christmas with Santa visits, home gifts, and decorated trees as churches held services. Presbyterian Sunday school presented a full program to a packed house, with festooned rooms, popcorn trees, lights, and recitations. The evening offering benefited a coastal orphanage, and gifts were distributed to all scholars by teachers.
Craig Hazelet from La touche visits home for Christmas, while W W Getchell of Seward, a mining and political figure, travels to the states aboard the Mariposa. An impromptu Loyola Club dance delights youths as the Admiral Watson sails from Juneau and Miss Francis Root visits Seward residents during the holidays.
Louis Golden of Fairbanks Alaska travels to Cordova for medical surgery. The send off includes cautionary reading from The Bane and How to Detect Its Presence and a Ladies' Home Journal file for Louie read at redhouses nights. Neighbors joke about his luggage and plan a pre wake while wishing him safe return with Ned Griffin guarding his money.
Captain Robert M. Nolan reported a reply from the second postmaster general on winter mail between Valdez and Willow Creek. Investigation found very limited winter demand, so the department would not fund the required service. The Valdez Chamber of Commerce pressed for the route, but received a nearly identical reply in the last steamer mail.
A raid by county officers at the Tacoma Ruston dock searched the steamer Northwestern from Alaska for contraband. Seventeen quarts of whisky and two gallons of port wine were found in sailors quarters, some hidden in suitcases and sacks. Sailors claimed absent mindedness as they left Seattle with the liquor. One sailor, Pedi Augustus Rodriguez of Tim a Peru, was taken into custody after the ship’s captain hosted deputies at lunch.
Paris reports show living costs in France rising by at least per cent over three years with bread as the only exception. Experts cite war disruption and failed interior navigation projects by the government as key causes, noting Belgian and German ports gaining share of European trade while French ports lag behind.
U S Commissioner Lee Van Slyke of Susitna station has been relieved of his duties. He was listed as a Democrat, and records show no illness or absence on election day. precinct returns indicate a solid Wickersham vote. Rumors say other Democratic officials may face similar fate soon.
Rome reports concern over the depreciation of the Italian currency in foreign markets. The lira fallen in value since the war, with the American dollar rising from five lire’15 centimes to about six lire 50 centimes in Italy. European currencies also weaken. the lira buys fewer francs, and Paris values show the lire at lower purchasing power. Italy cites Switzerland and Spain as examples of devaluations facing European nations.
Mrs Sarah Johnson, born 1886, died December 24, 1916, buried at Eyak cemetery. Rev R E Ziegler officiated. service at Lambert's undertaking rooms before burial. Frank Johnson, employed by Carlisle Packing Co., and many friends attended. Community sympathy extends to the Johnson family.
The Cordova Mill and Lumber Company began installing its plant on Water Street in the former C. J. Goodall planing mill building. The firm reportedly has enough orders to keep sawing lumber for the next six months.
