After twenty two days marooned on rocky shores the crew salvaged stores and endured a single daily meal. Two men then rowed 56 miles to Icy Bay to reach Katalla with the others rescued by a gas-boat.
In San Francisco on December 20 a twenty million dollar merger finalizes the organization of the Columbia Steel Company system. The merger unites Columbia Steel of Pittsburg with the California Portland and Utah Coal and Coke Company of Utah. W. E. Creed is named president of the new organization.
