German assault near Ypres failed as Allied machine guns and heavy rifle fire repulsed Teuton troops. Poison gas and artillery followed, with German casualties piling up in no man’s land. Subsequent reports say Balkan fronts see limited action and redeployments to Saloniki amid broader Allied offensives in the near east.
El Paso reports a peace treaty between Villa forces and the Carranza government has been drawn up and signed in the Mexican consulate. Villa reportedly agrees to withdraw from Mexican affairs. Washington says Villa would receive U S asylum if he flee to the United States as Carranza forces advance.
A December fire in Fairbanks destroyed the California saloon the largest saloon in Alaska built by Al White in 1904. Owned by Andy McKensie the building and contents were a total loss with $20,000 in value, partially insured. The blaze then leveled Healy cash grocery and gutted the Northern hotel. Hasbe Saloff, 35, a Russian, died in the California during the fire. The cold 25 below zero hampered firefighters as they fought the flames and prevented spread to nearby structures.
President Wilson and his bride arrived in Hot Springs Arkansas from Washington after their wedding. They plan a two week honeymoon at the Homestead Hotel and spent the first day in seclusion then golf. European and Asian monarchs sent congratulations and Wilson sent replies while the telegraph office handled a flood of messages. One-fourth off on all cut glass at Blum ONeill Co. Paris reports French economist Paul Leroy Beaulieu foresees the war ending within a year and a swift postwar boom in manufacturing. He argues nations will avoid universal financial collapse, with wealth rebuilds over ten to twelve years and fiercer international trade, including free trade England and higher tariffs in the United States.
Berlin reports Allied monitors from France and Britain moved near the Belgian coast and shelled German positions along the western front in Flanders. German land batteries answered the attack and forced the warships to retire without notable damage.
Report from Brindist on December 20 states Greek and Bulgarian detachments clashed along the Greek frontier near Epirus. Several officers were killed and many wounded as Greeks rushed reinforcements to the area.
London dispatch reports the war office stating British casualties in Serbia total 1391, with 85 killed. Bulgarians after Monastir press against French under Sarrail on the left while British on the right hold. The French retreat prompt British realignment to preserve the allied line.
Rome reports that Italy forms a Nationalist party devoted to seizing the moment of wartime to realize national aspirations. A new Rome daily Idea Nazionale has been founded to proclaim this policy, contrasting Italy with Entente powers driven by humanitarian aims.
The city council will meet in regular session tonight. Gust Rust of McCarthy and Sid Wolff of Seward are in town on business. R. E. Lewis left for Seattle to spend Christmas with relatives. Mrs. M. A. Snyder traveled to Seattle aboard the Alameda. Henry Logan from Mile 78 is taking a few days in town. Gust Heimbrish and C. F. P. Wylde of Fairbanks await a Seattle steamer. Louis Dahl arrived from Mile 67 by train to stay for the holidays. Attorney R. E. B. Capers left for Los Angeles to spend holidays with friends. Judge John A. McGinty of Seward was aboard the Alameda en route to Los Angeles. Heavy snowfall last night marks one of the season’s heaviest accumulations. The Anchorage Seward dog race project gains support from local groups. Fred Rayer, Windsor Hotel night clerk, out with influenza. L. G. Belter covers duties. Alex McDonald of Alaska Steamship Co. visited Cordovans en route to Seattle. Attorney Walter D. Peters of Bremerton visits Windsor and plans a line trip. Mine Inspector Wm. Maloney returned from Juneau after mine investigations. Mrs. Craemer, Marion Craemer, and Mrs. Louis Golden arrive from Fairbanks en route to the States. BE. R. McFarland, ex-signal corps at Valdez, now heads Alaskan Engineering Commission telephone and telegraph work. C. Seward forms a Republican Club with local business leaders. J. M. Sloan elected president, L. L. James secretary. Wm. Crawford, “Big Bill,” now reassigned from Alameda to Cordova as first assistant engineer.
Frederick Metzler, a German detainee among six arrested on conspiracy to injure shipping and destroy munitions plants, provides a detailed report on Paul Koenig of Hamburg America Line. Koenig allegedly ran twenty agents in New York to gather ship supply data and plan factory destruction, with connections to Captain Von Papen. Evidence also ties Koenig to the Welland Canal sabotage plan and a steamer Minnehaha fire.
Washington reports Secretary Lansing sent a new note to Vienna regarding the Ancona matter via Ambassador Penfield last night. The note, not public yet, could strain relations if U.S. demands are ignored. In Greece, Premier Gounaris wins election as Venizelos opposition abstains, yielding a light turnout.
The U.S. State Department confirmed a strong protest to Great Britain over interference with neutral parcel post between America and Sweden. Britain contends Germans use parcel post to dodge the blockade, shipping rubber to Sweden later sent to Germany for tires. London reports a gas bomb test goat escaped and was nursed back to health after experiments at a French station.
The Alameda left port after arriving from the westward and stayed until 9 AM Sunday. It carried copper ore for the Tacoma smelter and hopes to reach Seattle Friday morning for Christmas. Outgoing passengers for Seattle included Mrs M A Snyder and several others. for Juneau were Wm Maloney and J D Armstrong, among others.
The Northwestern steamer arrived in Seattle and its northbound sailing is postponed to Tuesday evening. A new engine for the Copper River and Northwestern railroad is due aboard the freighter Cordova, along with dynamite and other explosives. A train departed for Chitina this morning.
Ex president William Howard Taft is ill with chills while traveling west and is not expected to appear in public for at least a week though later reports say he is not confined to bed and will keep his speaking engagement in Lacrosse Wisconsin tonight.
New York reports copper jumps to 25 cents amid wild excitement. The metal surge sparks a broad market reaction with heavy trading and notable gains across leading mining shares.
