Paris reports eighty German cannons captured at Verdun with small French losses. Since December 4 on the Verdun front France has taken 11 400 prisoners. Also Greece accepts allied terms. Berlin notes Teutons advance in Roumania with two thousand more prisoners and Russian withdrawal in Dobrudja.
Seattle December 18. The steamer Mariposa departed Saturday at 5 oclock for southwestern Alaska. Among her Cordova passengers were John Metzger his wife and two children Mrs Wm McFadden Chas harquist Mrs May Colburn Miss A Sullivan E F Medley Carl Sarin Peter Vashon Chris Vashon I Graham Carl Whitman John Berg J Hanson I Strimanle and two steerage travelers.
Los Angeles on December 18 reports Llewellyn iron works nearly destroyed by a Saturday fire. Firemen contained the damage to about 500000. Explosions were heard and police probe possible dynamite attack linked to a prior act by John McNamara, now serving a penitentiary term for dynamiting the plant two years ago.
Franz Bopp German consul general and several associates faced a U S district court trial on conspiracy charges. Prosecution alleges plans to destroy munitions plants railroads and ships aiding allies with actions spanning the United States and Canada beginning around World War I. Indictments date from 1916 involving Baron von Schack Baron van Brincken J F van Koolbergen Margaret Cornell Charles Crowley and Louis J Smith with about 250 witnesses expected over five weeks.
Washington December 16 Delegates fight stalled Alaska fishing bill. Wickersham argues it would grant $99,000 yearly to canneries by exempting them from taxes. The license clause and vetoed tax provisions draw fire while Hadley defends the measure and Alexander concedes the bill is effectively dead.
Botth Fisheries Company has bought the Seldovia salmon cannery and will raise annual output to 125 000 cases. Also advertised are shoe polishing services and an Alaskan Hotel barber shop with prompt delivery.
New York reports a softer copper market as peace prospects improve. Demand has fallen, yet leading agencies hold 30.5 to 34 cents for second and third quarter divisions while quotations stay nominal amid weak business.
The Alameda left at 10 this morning for Seattle with a large group of passengers including Mrs. E. L. Harwood and many others from the interior. Also listed are several travelers headed for Juneau and Seattle, among them Mrs. Hard ing, H. Anderson, J. Palmer, and C. Spland, among others.
Gus Hegblooms death in a Valdez bay accident near Ellamar ends a cargo voyage. Accompanied by wife and brother in law Carl Nelson, he tried to restart a balky engine on the launch Helen after leaving Valdez. Hogbloom could not swim and disappeared in the cold water. Nelson, adrift with one oar and a blanket sail, rowed 28 hours to reach Ellamar with the Indian agent C W Cook guiding the rescue. Mrs Hogbloom and Nelson faced severe grief and peril.
The cableship Burnside cannot repair a cable break sixty miles southwest of Yakutat due to stormy seas. Both cable ends have been picked up and buoyed, and repair could take a few hours in favorable conditions. The break likely resulted when a fishing schooner fouled the line with its anchor. After repairs the Burnside will relay the section ten miles farther off shore into deep water.

A local man named Harry Imanura, described as Japanese, is presumed dead near Kern Creek after a Thanksgiving disappearance. Search parties have scoured the area for months with no trace found.
