British forces bombarded Turkish fortifications in the Gulf of Saros north of the Dardanelles today, routing Turkish troops and destroying the forts with heavy Turkish losses.
Official dispatches from Vienna and Berlin claim a large victory over the Russians. The messages say Russian forces have fallen back along the entire line from the Baltic to the Carpathians, with the German center now about thirty miles from Warsaw. Austro German forces reportedly advance two thirds across Galicia and move toward the fortress of Lembers to siege the port.
The Russian war office denies German Austrian victories in Galicia and says engagements west of Warsaw were costly with no decisive gains for either side. It says the German advance from the north suffered heavy losses and failed to move toward Warsaw despite reinforcements.
Advices from the front in France and Belgium report the allies are foot by foot driving Germans from the trenches in Flanders and maintaining steady pressure along the line from Switzerland to the sea. The report claims advances at many points and suggests a German retreat into their own borders unless reinforced.
London Dec 18 Great Britain annexes Egypt and Sudan depriving Turkey of its final African possession.
In Cairo and across garrison towns, Britain formally proclaims Egypt a protectorate. The British flag is hoisted and a salute fired marking the event.
Nine trains carry United States troops to Naco Arizona to guard the border amid fighting between Villa and Carranza forces. The troops will be posted along the Mexican frontier to protect Americans from cross border fire as battles continue near this point. The Copper River Gun Club lodge has been moved to Orca for winter storage.
The Cordova Chamber of Commerce wired Delegate Wickersham asking Rep. John J. Fitzgerald to push immediate appropriation for aid to navigation. They urge a survey and dragnet of Alaska waters and lighthouse tenders, with a follow up letter to Secretary Redfield. A meeting approved the telegram and a shipwreck noted near Coon Inlet underscores the need.

The Interstate Commerce Commission estimates a 5 percent freight-rate increase will raise annual railroad income by about 30 million dollars for lines from the Mississippi valley to the Atlantic seaboard north of the Ohio and Potomac rivers. Western routes Western Buffalo and Pittsburg will gain full 5 percent leeway from August partial advances. North to south, travel notes include Major French and Frank Johnson among Seattle passengers, and a baby born to John Rowan’s family in Seward. Catholic services and local injuries are noted along with a Chitina mail run and a sale ad from O Neill and Slater Co.

A Constantinople dispatch reports rising anti German feeling across Turkey that could drive withdrawal from the European conflict. Opponents argue Turkey is insolvent and being used by Germany for an ally that yields little in return. If the Allies prevail Turkey might be expelled from Europe, if Germany wins its fate would not improve.
London noon report says Allies captured the Belgian town of Westend near Nieuport after heavy bombardment by British warships. Unconfirmed by the War Office. Also reported are Allied gains along the Belgium front with German trenches captured as forces make gains amid close combat.
Rome reports thousands unemployed and rising living costs. To ease hardship the government plans to employ idle men on public improvements to relieve suffering among the poorer classes.
Reports from Austria say the oat h of yesterdaying, though the crisis lingers as popular clamor grows for ending the war. Heads expect Austria may sue for peace or face civil strife.
Buenos Ayres reports a British squadron under Admiral Sturdee engaged German warships off the Falkland Islands last week. Four British sailors were killed and 56 wounded amid the fighting while in port today.
