The Chickaloon company, a $1,200,000 Malian-American firm, received the first license to mine Alaska coal since field openings. It plans to supply California and Seattle with fuel at lower prices amid the fuel shortage.
Washington December 12 The senate military committee opened its inquiry into the war department's work in equipping forces. Major General Crozier chief of ordnance said the 1916 act envisioned a 1 000 000 man force raised in five years, not one year. The program had not counted on United States participation and compressed a five year plan into one year.
Eagle Pass Texas dec 12 reports that Villistas have captured Monclova about 150 miles away. Wires are cut and details are unavailable.
Boston representative Tinknam fired the first American shot at Austria sending a 149 millimeter shell across the Piave to Austrian positions at Gonfo. Italian troops cheered as smoke marked the strike.
Governor Strong intends to suspend the Alaska eight hour law at Secretary of War Baker’s request. The suspension will apply to fishing and allow longer work days to produce more food for the armed forces, effective January 1.
Alexander Vangiriewald, former German consul at Seattle, has been arrested in San Francisco as a dangerous alien.
The Seattle Chamber of Commerce adopted resolutions urging Congress to modify Senate Bill 2812 to allow competitive bidding for Alaska coal lands and to provide for a prospecting permit, while also promoting development of Alaska oil fields.

Private Frank Slavin a former professional boxer returned from the Yukon to Canada and declined a commission. At age fifty four he led the 67th Vancouver battalion by recruiting 800 men, stayed in the ranks with his men, and later saw his unit absorbed into the 4th Pioneers. His sons serve in France with a BC battalion. Slavin, a mining engineer by trade, won a brigade heavyweight title while in England.
In Los Angeles on December 11 barbers hike prices due to wartime costs. Hair cuts shampoos and massages rise from twenty five to forty cents under a recent Master Barbers' association scale. The neck shave, once included with the fifteen cent shave, now carries an extra five cents.
The restaurants of Cordova sign a wartime conservation pledge to not serve beef, mutton or pork on Tuesdays and to avoid wheat bread or wheat products on Wednesdays. Named signatories include Wells Restaurant Schiller's Restaurant Slater's Restaurant Alaskan Grill Cordova Grill Cordova Cafe Tom Hamakawa.
Petrograd faced rising danger as opposition consolidates and unrest spreads in Petrograd and Moscow. Cossacks move north from the Don to confront Bolsheviks. Russian officials in London claim anti Bolshevik leaders dominate the movement. Estimates suggest 400,000 Cossacks may rejoin the counterrevolution after a prior defeat near Bielgorod.
