President Wilson addressed Congress urging a survey and proper lighting of Alaska’s coast to ensure safe travel north. He pressed passage of the Merchant Marine bill and deferral of conservation measures, while defending national defense and opposing compulsory military service amid mixed applause.
Berlin reports a strategic move following Lodz fall as German forces push toward Warsaw. Moscow and London dispatches cite continued fighting in the south with Allied and Austro-Hungarian units active. Prisoners are reported and official statements claim German success amid ongoing operations.
An official bulletin says German forces defeated the Russians and chase them south and east of Lodz. The Germans march toward Warsaw and expect to capture the city soon.

Narmon and Deever, Harmon drilling and prospecting machinery makers in this city, began a test drill beneath their Diggs building. The Harmon Junior core drill uses diamondite shot for cutting and promises lower cost and higher speed than diamond drills. The complete unit weighs about 700 pounds, separable into light pieces, with a 1400 pound engine option. Visitors are invited to view the demonstration.

President Wilson told callers at the White House he favored a congressional investigation of U S preparedness for war and disclosure of all defense facts. He endorsed thorough discussion but rejected Gardner’s committee plan and said he suspected an organized lobby seeking to inflame military debate.
Berlin reports confirm allied offensive along the front in France and Belgium but say actions are few and easily repulsed. Dutch dispatches cite fierce fighting near the Yser in Belgium. French bulletins claim the Allies have advanced with considerable gains along the line.
Petrograd December 8 The Bourse Gazette reports German losses in the Lodz fighting last month totaling 100000 men with high officer casualties. Colonels and generals remained on the line until escaping by motorcycle, as officers took grave risks to save their troops and casualties surpassed normal levels.
A war office bulletin reports French forces advancing rapidly in Alsace and besieging Metz, the German fortress. New siege guns are said to match the power of the great German pieces as they reduce the forts.
