Washington December 7 the senate voted 74 to 0 to declare war on Austria with Stone urging immediate adoption. LaFollette abstained. Grynna Norris and Vardaman opposed. House expected to approve despite dissent from London officials.
A traveling flour sack started by Shriners in May moves through cities including Leavenworth and Butte to raise funds for the Red Cross. The sack has toured Honolulu and steamboats, sold and raffled repeatedly, with proceeds supporting Union war relief and ongoing Shriner charity drives.
Federal agents seized letters indicating a German military defense organization in the United States. Otto Julius Merkel, a German writer and lecturer, was arrested and is believed to head the group.
Berlin reports a new Teuton offensive capturing 4,900 more Italians, totaling 15,000, and taking Monte Siscol by storm.

London Dec 7 Mrs Maurice Hewlett wife of the novelist is the first woman to gain an air pilot license in England and now heads the all airplane factory. She notes women cannot fly during the war but can build aircraft and they are doing so by scores. Her 1911 certificate was the first for a woman and numbered 122.
Dr. W H Chase received a telegram from American Red Cross headquarters appointing him chair of the Christmas membership drive running Dec 17 to Dec 25 with a goal of creating fifteen million members nationwide. Geo C Hazlet named campaign manager and W R Hillery treasurer for Alaska. Cordova citizens urged to cooperate fully as local staff and plans are readied. Washington reports two American airmen wounded in combat with German planes.
