Clara Phil Ups, convicted of murdering Mrs Alberta Meadows, escaped from Los Angeles County Jail by sawing bars and climbing out a window. Authorities learned of the breach hours later as a dragnet and posses spread across Southern California to prevent crossing into Mexico.
Testimony before the Board of Inquiry probing how midshipmen at the Naval Academy obtained liquor in Philadelphia after the Army-Navy game stated that hotel arrangements were made by the Midshipman's Committee and approved by Commander Wurtz head of the Discipline Committee.
A deputy sheriff reported seeing a woman resembling Clara Phillips with a man matching her husband’s description in an automobile about five miles from the jail at ten this morning. Investigations showed Phillips had packed his belongings and left yesterday. A fur neckpiece believed to belong to Clara Phillips was found today in a tuned automobile in Long Beach.
