London December 5 The British cruiser Venus ran ashore on the English coast during a fierce storm while attempting to reach a south English port. The ship struck with force tearing foremast and bridge. many crew perished and others were rescued by life saving crews amid widespread merchant vessel wrecks and heavy losses.
Vienna reports say Austrian troops who seized Belgrade were halted by a strong force they could not identify. Officials suspect a Russian contingent aiding Servians blocked the pursuit, though no confirmation from Russia has arrived.
London dispatch reports a prolonged artillery duel in Flanders with heavy guns firing from dawn to dusk. Both sides conduct siege operations while infantry rest. German infantry attacks have largely ceased and Allied forces refrain from charging German positions.
London dispatch reports no change in Poland with no progress for either side. General Mackensen's German forces avoided a crushing defeat by bold maneuvers, breaking encirclement but suffering heavy casualties. Autos will run Chitina to Miers, then dog teams for 74 miles crossing the divide, and autos again from Donnelly's to Fairbanks for 172 miles. Sheldon cites past success and expects winter operation to succeed.
The steamer Alamede, from Seattle, is due about midnight after overnight delays. notable cabin passengers include Mrs. Clark and Mrs. Iberg among others. The Admiral Evans sails tonight, Mariposa tomorrow, and the Cordova freighter with lumber coal and explosives is due within days. La Touche will depart Seattle next Tuesday for southwestern Alaska with 300 tons of coal.
