New York reports a coordinated effort by twenty retail grocery presidents and Mayor Mitchell's committee to press down prices through boycotts on poultry and butter. The move paused until December 12 if prices ease, while wholesale egg prices drop three cents a dozen and households hold back Thanksgiving purchases.
Capt Knapp of the American naval forces proclaims military rule in the Dominican republic to end the local deadlock and honor treaty obligations. Secretary Daniels approves. Knapp expects affairs to be straightened out in a few days. Conditions are reported quiet and the population is pleased with the action.
New York December 1 Morgan and Co have withdrawn from the proposed sale of British and French treasury bills due to the Federal Reserve Board warning American bankers against purchasing until gold withdrawals are ordered from Europe.
Juarez Dec 1. Carranza officers mass troops at border points to curb Villa raids. Ozuma's cavalry clashed with Villa forces south of Serrazas, driving them back into Chihuahua.
Dec 1 in Terrytown reports John B Archibald Standard Oil magnate, seriously ill after appendicitis operation. Blood transfusion from his chauffeur administered. Also notes upcoming K P meeting at Masonic Hall Sunday at 7:30 PM.
Seattle, Dec. 1 The steamer Admiral Watson sailed Thursday with no passengers for Cordova. Friday morning the steamer Mariposa left with a list for Cordova including Mrs J Sapiro Mrs George Morgan Mrs Julius Pincus J Gillis and wife J Frazier Judge L Z Erwin Dong Long P King Bryan Lamprey C Davis and two steerage passengers.
Federal Mines Station to be established on the University of Washington campus serving Washington Oregon Idaho Montana and coastal Alaska from Ketchikan to Nome with a Fairbanks Alaska station for interior areas. Initial annual funding of 25000 plus potential increases supports electro metallurgical ore work and soon electric furnaces laboratories offices will be set up in the former Women's League building.
William Jennings Bryan invited to dine with President Wilson on December 6. Bryan hosts December 7 dinner celebrating the Democratic victory with National Chairman Vance McCormick as guest of honor.
In Cordova circulation is growing for the 1916 dime new in design but the same size as the old piece. One side shows Miss Liberty with a winged cap and the words In God We Trust and Liberty. The reverse displays a Roman fasces with E Pluribus Unum and One Dime. Overall, a more pleasing appearance than the old dime.
With winter settling in after the last vessels sailed, Nome shows a mining boom as the season’s gold take is projected to nearly double last year. Prospecting outfits and mining supplies leave Nome daily for nearby creeks. southbound ships have departed and weather remains mild with light snowfall and no mining fees in sight.
Large pack of timber wolves driven north by bounty hunters threatens Katalla residents and reindeer herds valued over two million dollars. Bounty crews depart to drive them off, but heavy snows may push wolves toward coastal reindeer parlors, not into caribou country.
Mrs W F Hill arranged a surprise card party for her husband featuring 500. First prizes went to Mrs Fry and Mr Bollinger, second to Miss Holstein and Mr Anderson, with Mrs Wells taking the booby. Guests included Mr and Mrs Bollinger and Victor Hendrickson, Mr Fry, Mrs Wells, Miss Mabel Holston, Geo McPherson, Oscar Anderson and John Strigsby.
Delegate returns show Sulzer leading by about fifteen votes as counts come in across divisions. Wickersham carried Marshall City by four votes earlier. Shushanna reports show Wickersham ahead by seventeen in that area, while Point Barrow and western precincts await results.
Roy Hall Young former Ordova Presbyterian pastor dedicates The Klondike Clan to the Arctic Brotherhood. He writes of the Klondike gold rush of 1897 with vivid Alaska scenery and hardy characters Parson Long Sandy and Viva. Viva, a Montana-raised sharpshooter, aids miners amid peril on the Chilkoot and Whitehorse rivers as winter approaches. The Yukon river near Dawson cleared of ice by November 6, 1915.
Mrs I M Price formerly of Cordova writes from England describing the harsh wartime conditions. She arrived October 2 after crossing the Atlantic in eleven days and fears the war will last years. She notes high costs, limited sugar, scarce food, and Zeppelin raids near their home. She recounts a change in a sister’s health and relief at reunion with two younger sisters.
Ameri can Punitive Expedition in Mexico reports from ARLD Headquarters describe aero squadron pilots enduring censorship and harsh flight conditions. One pilot survived a night spiral nose dive from 5000 feet, navigating by compass as clouds broke and he fought to regain control over a perilous descent.
Buenos Aires reports rapid erosion of the Argentine merchant marine as foreign demand drains freighters passenger boats and fishing craft. River Plate lines have sold passenger and cargo steamers with no replacements in sight. Two river boats sold to European buyers for £100,000 sterling and two modern tugs for £36,000.
