Undated Aug 22 Germans launch an offensive on the far northern Russian front. If sustained, the first objective appears to be the Russian port of Riga which would give a significant advantage in operations along the northern Russian flank.
Paris report says Julian Biddle an American aviator was killed in action two days ago while Corporal Harold Willis of Boston was brought down inside German lines. The casualty details follow the casualty list amid wartime dispatches from Paris.
Ten German aeroplanes approached the British coast. Two raiders were shot down while the rest failed to penetrate inland. Bombs dropped on Dover and Margate killed three and injured two. German airships raided Yorkshire coast last night with minimal damage.
