News dispatches report a new Allied offensive, pushing three miles along a 28 mile front. Additional items note submarine activity off the coast sinking ships Portage and Herwind, plus draft and exemption discussions and inductions at Fort Liseum and Cordova amid wartime mobilization.
Allied forces launch a wide front assault southeast of Amiens with British and French units claiming advances of over three miles and several prisoner captures. Tanks cross the Avre and Lace valleys as the push targets German Eighteenth Army under Von Hutier. American forces see no engagement.
Washington reports the agriculture department notes losses of 17 and 14 million bushels of wheat from prospective yields. Despite adverse weather, the corn and wheat crops are described as bumper and strong for the year.

A Berlin dispatch reports Russia declares war on Great Britain with Trotzky issuing orders naming France Britain and Czechoslovaks as enemies. The notice follows Bolshevik occupation of Archangel and the Allies advancing south along the railway toward Vologda.
Governor Thon told Daily Times he is pushing Washington to fix Alaska mail service and post office clash with ship schedules. He cited need to remunerate mail clers on Alaska steamers and possible delays at port docks and westward sailings. Admiral Scheuer stated extending the draft is unnecessary as the Navy has nearly all personnel needed.
London dispatch reports an American front line correspondent noting American troops ignore Colonel Roosevelts caution and pursue rough warfare. The AA man says there has been no soft approach but vows to ensure Germans face stern action in the field.
In Baton Rouge on August 8 the Louisiana legislature ratified the prohibition amendment to the federal constitution signaling state approval of the nationwide measure. The action reinforces the national push to prohibit alcohol nationwide with state endorsement confirmed by the legislature.
A small American freighter with no guns was sunk by a submarine off the North Carolina coast on Tuesday. An initial report said sixteen to seventeen crew members were missing, but later updates indicate the entire crew has landed.
