In Detroit on August 7 Charles E. Hughes Republican presidential candidate praised forty Detroit manufacturers employing 100000 workers for welfare efforts. He urged treating American laborers as fellow workers and met with women delegates, reiterating support for suffrage.
The American Red Cross has started supplying comforts and necessities to National Guardsmen on the Mexican border. Receiving stations have been set up in major Pacific coast cities to collect and ship items under President Wilsons proclamation. The drive seeks reading material games comfort bags pajamas cotton socks towels pipes tobacco cigarettes fans chewing gum chocolate evaporated cream canned fruits and more.
New York Aug 7 The vote count of 400000 railroad men is overwhelmingly in favor of a general strike. The Switchmen's Union and railroad companies agreed to settle their differences by arbitration to join the Times job printing department.
