Drowned Youth and Two Friends Face Theft Charge
A Michigan youth died in an accidental drowning at Cumberland Falls Indiana? No, Kentucky’s Cumberland River. Steven P. Batey, 18, Otisville Michigan, drowned near the falls Friday around 7:30 p.m. His companions Rodney Blaisindale and Kath Jean Sullivan, both 18 of Flint and Morris Michigan, are jailed in Whitley County on charges of possession of stolen property tied to a car stolen in Flint July 16. Trooper Larry Lewis arrested them at the scene after the body was recovered about 9 p.m. Blaisindale reportedly swam back to help Batey, who disappeared about 15 feet from the bank. The Williamsburg Rescue Squad recovered the body downstream. Coroner Carl Paul ruled death accidental.

Family Of Five Hurt In I 75 Crash Near Corbin Ky
A Lexington family of five suffered minor injuries in a one car crash on Interstate 75 south of Corbin near the U S 25 interchange. Mr and Mrs Joseph Droba and their children Patricia 16 Sandra 13 and Tracy 5 were taken to Southeastern Kentucky Baptist Hospital by ambulance. Mrs Droba told investigators she fell asleep at the wheel before the car struck a bank.

Judge Halts Wet-Dry Vote In Lily
Laurel County Judge John D. Gross Jr. rejected a petition for a local option election in Lily precinct set for August 20 citing the 1961 Court of Appeals ruling that a precinct vote within a dry county is illegal after the county votes dry as a unit. Laurel County last voted dry on December 15, 1936, and no wet day election has occurred since. Seventy-one Lily voters submitted the petition and the matter was referred to Judge Gross for ruling.

Burglars Lose Safe When It Sails Out Door
Burglars attempted to move a heavy safe from the Seven-Up Bottling Co. office at 18th Street after entering through an upstairs window. The safe weighed too much and dragged it out a ground floor door, crashing into the street. Police found the safe at about 2:30 a.m. with no further suspects identified.
