W. H. Hampton of Saltillo Arkansas denies rumors that J. W. Simmons took funds to build a local church. He states Simmons did not run away and that all money and petition were returned or will be reassigned to contributors if the church is not built. A June 28 1900 notice.
At 3 am on June 19 a blaze ripped through Conway Printing Co in St Louis, destroying theLog Cabin and Democrat offices and the gas building used for the office. The butcher shop of B G Muse and Witt’s store and wagon yard buildings were also burned. The printer’s firm reports full insurance and immediate reestablishment with a new outfit, and asks patrons to aid in restoring subscriber lists.
A group of young ladies and chaperones wore mother hubbards and traveled to a woodland stream. They spent the day listening to rippling waters and the forest, enjoying a dreamlike day of bliss that will linger in memory.
Hendrix College in Conway reports success with the board of trustees announcing the college is out of debt. An endowment is being secured and needed improvements are planned. President A. Millar will continue leading the institution.
At the Pine Bluff meeting on June 29 the State Teachers Association elected officers for the coming year led by President D L Paisley of Conway. Other officers include J W Conger Arkadelphia recording secretary Miss May Dodd Little Rock and vice presidents J D Cleary Fordyce C I Scott Harrison J W Kuykendall Little Rock F M Malone Paragould A D Carden Camden. The community joins in praising Paisley for his service and leadership. Pinsley is credited with much of last meeting’s success as former corresponding secretary.
The Rock Island Railroad tests the 1200 series locomotive Nos 1201 and its power on a Chicago to Rock Island run with fourteen heavy coaches. The engine reached speeds above 75 mph, aiding Rock Island excursions to Colorado with special trains leaving July 9 17 and August 1 at 445 p m.
Delegates from five counties gathered at the courthouse on June 25 to nominate Hon. Hugh A. Dinsmore as the Democratic candidate for Congress. K K. S. Humphreys chaired, W. H. Hyatt was secretary. Dinsmore led the primary vote with 16,439 across the counties, and delegates later joined a carriage drive through the city with supporters.
The Arkansas Methodist Oration prize went to W. N. Pittman while H. L. Remmel authored the prize essay. A. L. Hutchins and A. L. McKennon shared the preparatory scholarship honors with Will Steele. Guy Murphy took Ware Mathematics prize and H. M. Owen earned the preparatory scholarship. J. B. McDonough debater's medal awarded to M. E. Dunaway with second prize to Guy Murphy. Harlan Literary Society medals presented by Dr. J. H. Riggin in his customary jubilant style.
Advertises Green's August Flower as a universal remedy for indigestion biliousness and liver regulation. Claims doctors were scarce in the past and touts the product as a cure that relieves headache and general malaise with a few doses. Sold by all druggists.
Faulkner County Sunday school union calls the Sunday School Convention at Union Valley Church on Friday July 13 1900 at 2 30 pm with a full program of devotions addresses by A G Duran C B Parsons Z Baize J D Roland T I Mathews C C Jones Rev J E Dunaway G D Sowell ten minute talks by workers and committee reports followed by elections and next meeting site.
A compiled roundup notes Minnesota rivers drying hampering lumber yields in the region. Missouri orchards suffer canker worm damage cutting apple crops by three quarters. Wichita county Kansas ends the poorhouse as paupers vanish. Great Yarmouth’s Kitty Witches Row earns fame as a near two foot wide street. Bahama pink pearl harvest commands high prices. Washington DC adds a city playground from a southeastern reservation. Philippine service seen as severe yet cavalrymen gain weight in Cuba and Porto Rico.
Despite scorching conditions the state reports damaging rains spread widely. The Congressional Convention drew many visitors to Conway on June 25, highlighting continued political activity in the region.
New York Democrats endorse William Jennings Bryan and the Constitution. Faulkner County gave nine votes to J C Monroe for State Auditor at the Convention. The Choctaw and Memphis railroad sold to Choctaw Oklahoma and Gulf for 1 621 500. On the 127th ballot Judge J G Wallace of Pope County was nominated for railroad commissioner from the fourth and fifth congressional districts.
Hon. J. E. Martin of Conway is named as the logical candidate for superintendent under the new regime. His supporters say his team won in the primaries and he is fully qualified for the duties. They praise his record as Financial Agent of the institution.
James K. Jones Jr. will oversee ticket distribution at the Democratic National Convention. C A Walsh, secretary of the national committee, will make the final allotment. Walsh says applications already exceed convention hall capacity in Kansas City many times.
The report notes cotton trading at modest levels and forecasts a sunnier period for farmers. It comments that Republicans must mount a strong challenge against Jeff Davis, who is likened to a rough rider.
The State convention provided about as many liked as disliked candidates. Overall, supporters are pleased and pledge to back the ticket against any Republican. China faces a modern enigma that may disrupt international harmony in the coming weeks. The Jackson Supreme Court denied Miss Marion Griffin of Memphis the right to practice law, a decision seen as gender biased by Griffin and her supporters.
