A Cuban constitutional convention has accepted the Platt amendment after debate. Senator Robert L. Lawrence of Russellville and Miss Stella Royston of Washington Arkansas plan marriage June 26, noting their Senate winter courtship.
The Faulkner County School Book Board adopts a six year series for all public schools. Exchange price is 50 percent off old books, expires December 22, with readers by January 4, 1902. Directors must adopt promptly, file annual reports by July 20, and complete enumerations.
The popularity standings show participants Carrah Kolding Livingston Paine Dunaway Pearl Livingston May Welcher Murphy with scores noted beside names though some text is garbled. The list reflects a local contest likely among students or community members.

Fox hunt Friday by Joe Green and others ends with a fox killed after a hard chase. A heavy rain last Saturday boosts crops. Bill Basket attended as usual. June 10.
The St. Louis Iron Mountain and Southern Railway offers reduced round trip certificates for the Grand Chapter Order of the Eastern Star Arkansas Texarkana June 25 with June 25 limit. International convention Baptist Young People's Union Chicago July 25 28 one fare plus 2 dollars round trip sale July 23 25 return by July 30 extension to Aug 31 for 50 cents. Dispatches report negotiations concluded with the United States acquiring the Danish West Indies. The purchase price is settled at 4,000,000 dollars. The Danes are to trade under the same tariff as the American territories.
The twenty ninth annual Arkansas Press Association meeting ended in Hot Springs with about 175 members present. President A H McDaniels presided as prizes were awarded for best printed paper, job work and display. Officers and delegates to national bodies were elected and a Buffalo excursion for about ninety members was organized.
In Camden a man named Will Bussy was sentenced to death after a false accusation by Mrs. Watson. She now says the crime was staged to ruin the accused to aid her husband, who threatened desertion. Bussy will be liberated as the truth emerges.
The weekly climate summary reports warmer days with cool nights delaying vegetation. Rainfall was uneven with northern areas needing more and other regions suffering moisture excess. Cotton stands are generally poor, corn is fair, wheat and oats damaged by dry weather, and harvests underway in places. Potatoes vary by locality with bug damage, fruit drop common but a fair to good overall crop in many areas.
The census bureau shows Arkansas growth since the war with figures for each decade from 1860 to 1900. 1860 population 485 150, 1870 484 471, 1880 802 525, 1890 1 128 179, 1900 1 811 461.
John Starks shot and killed Will Amis on the W. H. Eagle place in Lonoke county and severely beat his wife Mirza Stark. Infidelity cited as the cause of the tragedy. Also notes the Christian church annual state convention meeting for three days at Fort Smith starting on the 4th.
Lee Vieck owner of a Little Rock restaurant was shot by Reedy Vance after demanding pay for a five cent bowl of soup. Vance fired from the sidewalk as Vieck died in his shop. Vance, once respected, has a history of violent acts and saloon life, including prior killings and acquittals.
Hardy Sherfield was shot three times and died at a Hot Springs saloon by George Kilgore, a barkeeper. Kilgore, behind the bar, fired after a confrontation sparked by Sherfield claiming to come to “clean him out.” Sherfield’s notoriety includes involvement in a famous missing person case. Also noted are Ouachita College graduates, with twenty five diplomas awarded at closing exercises on the 6th.
An 1901 Arkansas act amends the statute of frauds to require that any promise to pay a debt or obligation discharged in bankruptcy be in writing. The act, approved May 23, 1901, applies to all such promises and aims to improve enforceability in bankruptcy cases.
