James R. Lee Acquitted in Hicks Slaying at Lockesburg
James R. Lee was acquitted of the killing of L. C. Hicks of Winthrop in Litle River county. The incident occurred June 9 1898 as Hicks knocked Lee down after a friendly tap. Lee stabbed Hicks during the ensuing struggle. A venue change to Sevier county in January 1899 followed a hung jury in the first trial. Lee was later found concealed in a hay loft while attempting to escape.
