The Senate defeated the Humphreys measure restricting convict contracts to two years and banning extensions beyond January 1, 1900.

Tom Horsfall, while calling on a young lady, confronted a burglar in the Little Rock residence. The intruder dashed toward the kitchen and Horsfall fired, hitting him in the back of the head, killing him instantly.
John Drew, a renowned moonshiner, visited U S Marshal Suddeth in Hot Springs last week and announced he is ready for trial. Federal officers say Drew is one of the country’s most remarkable bootleggers, baffling authorities as he evaded arrest despite years of pursuit by many agents.

In a Berlin speech the German emperor told regiments it would be their duty to annihilate disobedience with bayonets. Berlin press denounced the harsh stance as severe.

Garland County resident Jane Gully, a Black woman who has lived in three centuries, celebrated her 101st birthday last January 1 in good health. Born in North Carolina and formerly enslaved by Wade, she married once and raised her son Giles Gulley while living in Arkansas.
