Frank Fawcett, who brought his starving family to this city, faced charges after he had Mr. John Gift and wife arrested on a charge of attempted provoke. A mayoral trial acquitted Gift, while Fawcett’s conduct and failure to provide for his sick wife were cited as brutal.
The Conneraville Bowling Club defeated Liberty three straight games at Thomas' alley. The Thursday night affair saw Liberty overpowered in all fixtures amid a dominant display by Conneraville.
The Connersville Gas and Electric Co plant, estimated at 80 000 dollars, was sold at the receiver's sale for 8 000 dollars to Eastern Bondholders. Sheriff Lewis levied the dynamos and arc lights for the Ft Wayne Electric Co. Two suits were filed against the firm by Catharine Duboie for 3 000 dollars and Anthony Watt for 1 000 dollars.
The Tri County German Baptist Mutual Insurance Company of Wayne Fayette and Union counties met in the Fayette county courthouse commissioners’ room. Officers were re elected and a strong report showed losses and expenses paid with only 14 cents per 100 in assessments. The balance sheet lists numerous figures including policies in force 511 and total receipts and expenditures. Next meeting set for Richmond January 1899 and the association thanks Fayette county officials for use of the room.
A serious accident occurred Thursday afternoon at the Fifth street school building playground during a game called Blackman. Frank Wenger and Lee Thomas, about twelve, collided. Wenger suffered severe head and facial injuries and internal harm. Dr. Ford treated him. Henry Barnum visited Friday evening.
Mrs. Linderman of North Central avenue slipped and fell near her home, badly injuring her right thigh. Dr. Dillman treated her. A young son of Jacob Huber cut an upper lip in the afternoon. the wound was sutured by Dr. Dillman.
A boy named Joe Stair aged under twelve was arrested by Constable Reese on Friday morning on a warrant from a boy named Hitzman. The case stems from a January 11 fight. trial set in Squire Leach's court this evening.
An advertisement extols Syrup of Figs as a pleasant, effective tonic for kidneys liver and bowels. It claims gentle prompt action, cures constipation and colds and fevers, and notes the product is sold in 50 cent bottles nationwide with druggists ready to procure if unavailable.
A News representative joined twenty others in a Tuesday evening spiritualist seance conducted by W. E. Hart of Richmond Indiana. The session featured prayers songs rappings audible and written messages delivered via trumpet and pencil from supposed spirits with hands held to the medium throughout.
Mrs. Sweeney of North Eastern Avenue was severely injured when a trap door in the kitchen to the cellar opened under her as she walked across it. Her right knee was fractured and several ribs may have been broken in the fall. Neighbors C. E. Reeder and wife heard her cries and helped.
A violent gale last night caused extensive damage with fences down and timber blown away. A roof was lifted at an Indiana furniture factory, a barn near Bunker Hill lost its roof, and another barn on Davis McKinney’s farm was demolished.
Extensive building and renovations planned for Connersville this year include a new children's department at W H Becks Sons, with a larger stock and improved layout. Downs Heady Co begin work while Holberg clothing store adds a water closet and modern features. A correction notes Wetherald mill costs will be several thousand dollars, not $1,500.
A petition circulates for Earl Manlove to be freed from the Jeffersonville Reformatory, to be presented to the State Board of Pardons. Also promotes Grain-O coffee substitute sale in groceries, claimed gentle on stomachs and affordable at 15 or 25 cents per package.
