Reports from Berlin say German forces repulsed French attacks and advanced in Champagne near Verdun. They claim capture of Navarre and Paragio fortifications, with prisoners taken and reinforcements rushing to Verdun as French assaults continue.
Rushville delegation was not represented as Connersville officers patrolled Saturday night with few public disturbances reported. Mayor Braun warned offenders and downtown intoxicated men left the business district willingly. Bushville and nearby towns were quieter than usual as the Rushville party reportedly moved celebrations to Indianapolis or elsewhere.
Abraham Griffin of Union County is to be arraigned as jurors are drawn. Two other cases may be dropped for lack of evidence, and uncertainty surrounds witness and docket details as prosecutors outline possible charges and stage the March session.
Milburn Saylor, lightweight world title hopeful and familiar figure in Connersville, is dangerously ill with double pneumonia at his Indianapolis home. Doctors report recovery doubtful after a heavy cold worsened since Friday. Saylor married Anna Fitzgerald, once a resident of this city, and has visited Connersville many times.
County Auditor Glen W. Zell and Commissioners Shipley Jerman and Caliwell visited Rushville to discuss a six mile gravel road between Wienerweed and Fairview along the Fayette Iush county line. They will inspect roads and consider improvements with possible county takeover after work.
Indianapolis February 25. Rev Fuller aged 25 and Miss Julia Cornett of Connersville were issued a license to wed. Miss Cornett is daughter of William Cornett of 1526 Vermont Avenue.
The Connersville Boys Band grows with over thirty members under Prof. Young or Gethel Ohio. Rehearsals every Monday at 7 30 pm in the Eighth Street School Building, aided by Connersville Commercial Club members led by R A Holmes and E P Hawkins who raised funds for instruments and music.
Denton Retherford, one of Jennings Townships oldest residents, dies after two years of tuberculosis at his home in Alquina. Survived by wife, two sons Frank of Alquina and Lee of Fairfield, and four brothers. Funeral at Alquina Church tomorrow at 10 AM with burial in Springersville cemetery.
London February 26 ministers respond to editorials urging fiscal restraint. Civil servants to receive a quarter of salaries as five percent exchequer bonds in a move aimed at cutting government costs. Signaling broader acceptance, the civil service may be invited to similar pay concessions.
Residents are promised a banner event at the Elks Lodge on East Fifth street as the indoor fair begins tonight. Entertainments and amusements are planned for both women and men, with labor intensive preparations completed. The fair runs for five days and seeks a large turnout.
Captain Geo L Bumbaugh in charge of organizing a new aero corps for the Indiana National Guard donates his services and a 140 horsepower aeroplane capable of carrying three passengers and a machine gun. The state covers uniforms. he will seek funds for motorcycles and more aircraft through Aero Club of America. No memberships yet but expected mail influx. He plans to finish organization to aid at the next encampment.
William Leach, about sixty one, opened a long throat wound with a pocket knife on the Seventh Street Canal Bridge. He died minutes later after being helped to a nearby livery barn. A respected Connersville resident and former furniture worker, his despondency followed years of ill health. he leaves a son Emmett Leach and several relatives.
Firemen were summoned to Remington's Cigar Store at 9:30 PM to fight a basement blaze near the furnace. Chemicals were used to douse the flames quickly before major damage. Origin is believed to be an overheated furnace. smoke filled the room and nearby floors were at risk.
In Anderson Indiana on February 28 the Madison County Socialists held a convention and named candidates for county offices. State Senator Ray Butte Pendleton, Representatives Amos Coburn Verne Mohler Anderson, Commissioner North Cash Carter Elwood, Prosecutor Melvin Mohler Anderson, Commissioner Middle John Straub Anderson, Sheriff Cleve Murray Elwood, Treasurer L. S. Farmer Anderson, Surveyor Samuel Pyle Anderson, Coroner John Coburn Anderson.
Paris dispatch cites Temps military review estimating Germans use ten infantrymen for every three feet of front in the fiercest sector north of Verdun over an eight mile stretch from Brabant to Ornes. The piece says attacks stay within first line works, with three stronger lines behind. French losses north of Verdun acknowledged, but lines remain unbroken at any point.
