A telegram from Jardine, Matthewson & Co dated Shanghai June 28 reports Seymour arriving at Tien Tien with 312 wounded and 62 killed. Tren Tain damage exhorated. Shanghai quiet. An estimated 40,000 to 60,000 Chinese troops mass before Pekin with boxers from all sections converging on the capital.
Market notes show cattle steady and sheep strong with hogs closing easy. References include Kinsey Co brokers and Union Brokerage, with prices like heavy cattle around four dollars and hogs around two dollars. Also an advertisement for a tobacco cessation tonic and Sterling Remedy Co solicitations.
A domestic dispute between Elsworth Hamilton and his wife led to a fatal self-inflicted gunshot. Jim Meismer, a lodger linked to the family, assisted during the evening as tensions mounted. Police found Hamilton shot dead near the blacksmith shop after an altercation in which Meismer was questioned. Hamilton, born 1867, left four children and a widow, Fiona McClaughney, with the coroner preparing a verdict as the community mourns.
Rock Island engineers test the 1200 series locomotive, engine 1201, on a Colorado excursion plan.
