Mrs. Mary Stotsenburg, widow of Colonel James Miller Stotsenburg slain at Manila, recalls her experiences in the Philippines. She served as an army nurse and faced shellfire and battle in the front lines, reflecting on courage and the war’s realities.
A young soldier recounts two weeks in the Philippines near Cavite, describing fort bombardment, marching through Manila streets, camp life at California barracks, and experiences at the church site Sto Peter McCarty. He notes patrols, tents, skirmish lines, and the tense readiness for forward action as shots echo in the dawn.
A Civil War era letter recalls first battle experiences. Eb writes of near misses from bullets, volunteers charging over breastworks, hunger from missing breakfast, and scavenging bread and beans.
