In La Porte Indiana on June 17 Miss Sarah West aged 15 died at Hamlet from fright after a group of young men played a joke on her. The shock provoked spasms and she died as a result.
C W Leatherbee's lumber yard in Boston burned at about 1 o'clock this morning. The fire caused a total loss of lumber estimated between 2,000,000 and 8,000,000 feet.
Manila reports Colonel Cailles signed to surrender and gather his troops at Santa Cruz Laguna, expected over 100 men. Washington welcomes the capitulation as proof of insurgent disintegration amid pacification efforts.
New York dispatch reports a jury could not reach a verdict in the Samuel J. Kennedy murder case of Bolly Reynolds. The panel stood four for conviction and eight for acquittal. Judge Newburger discharged them. Attorney Moore plans to seek quashing of the indictment if the DA does not act. The case dates back to 1899 with prior trials and a 1900 appeals ruling granting a new trial.
Kansas City reports Lulu Prince Kennedy found guilty of murder in the second degree for killing her husband Phillip H. Kennedy on January 10. The jury imposed a ten year penitentiary sentence. The 20-year-old prisoner remained unmoved as the verdict was read. She later showed interest in but offered no further detail on the pending cases against her father C W Prince and brothers Bert and Wil Prince for allegedly conspiring to kill Kennedy.
William Meinhoffer, 23, shot Mary Bolte and later died at Fordham hospital. Miss Bolte died earlier the same night. A letter in Meinhoffer's coat claimed revenge for deception and a ruined life. He was cited as in love with Bolte and had a recent quarrel. Bolte had recently moved from Los Angeles and was associated with a small fortune.
London reports Lord Kitchener's dispatches from Pretoria. One clash near Welmansrust 20 miles south of Middelburg cost the British 2 officers and 16 men killed with many wounded. two officers and 80 men escaped. Earlier, General Eliot’s column near Reitz captured wagons, prisoners, rifles, ammunition, and 4,000 cattle after fighting De Wet.
The grand prix de Paris in Patia on June 17 was won by Cheri with Tibero finishing second and Lady Miller in third place.
Reports recount murders in Clarksville Tennessee and Madison downroads, a fatal arson in Gatucaville Texas, a stove explosion, a soldier’s clothing on a riverbank near Kankakee Illinois, a brakeman struck near Atchison Kansas, and a train collision near Elizabethown Tenn. Names include Wi Shepard Jick Warren Curry Turner Gannon Gibson Sharp Denboff Denby.
The Shreveport report from June 17 says Prince Eduards, murderer of John Gray Foster, is pursued in northeast Texas. The trail is evasive but the manhunt proceeds with a large armed force ready. Ben ton remains quiet and public temper has cooled.
