Soldier Austin Wippons of Company E, 23rd U S Infantry, describes life in the Philippines aboard the Butuan and at Jolo. He notes diverse inhabitants, local trade, guards on nights, and scarce meals while detailing patrols and a growing war outlook.
James Huston of Maplewood was thrown from a buggy when his horse ran on Elephant Hill. He suffered a broken bone in his left leg below the knee and facial bruises. Dr. Mountain cares for him as the runaway was captured near Merrifield's. William Passmore escaped serious harm after a 17 foot fall through ice during a coon hunting excursion, weighing 31 pounds, with only a wetting.
Indiana Horticultural Society met in Indianapolis for its annual session on the 3d and 4th inst. Leaders urged restructuring the society and pushing for a voice in the State Fair. The session focused on Desirable Shade Trees and condemned planting Carolina poplars for street shade, favoring hard maples, Norway maples and elms. John P Brown of Connersville, president of the Indiana Forestry Association, spoke on forestry knowledge and the need for better tree choices.
Alley of Pendleton Indiana proposes converting country fences into a long distance telephone network by adding farm connections and batteries. A line already links Anderson Pendleton and Ingalls over about 1 mile using the top strand. We are told the project will expand to use more wire fences and strands, and the system supposedly works splendidly.
On January 4, 1900 at 3 pm the Fayette County commissioners opened three bids for county printing and supplies. The Journal Company Indiana bid 523.50 Burford Co Indianapolis bid 540.05 Wilson Humphries Co Logansport bid 467.15 The contract went to Wilson Humphries Co as the lowest bidder.
The North Western Benevolent Society of Duluth grew from 70 policy holders and 74 assets to receipts over 140000 in 1899. For 25 cents monthly, it insures 40 monthly accident, 60.8 monthly sickness, and 500 on death with 12700 claims paid totaling over 250000 and no unpaid claims. District agent for Connersville is C A Bailey, McFarlan Block.

Zeller conveys land in Harrison Township to Lewis F. Powel for 375 dollars. John J. Peters sells a city lot to Rosalia Terry for 700 dollars. Fayette and Franklin G. R. Co. transfers a Connersville Township lot to Alva 8 for 400 dollars.
Charles Laverty to Serepta Viola McKee receive marriage license. W. F. M. S. meets next Saturday afternoon at the home of Mrs Rockefeller.
Porter outlines practical steps for profitable potato farming including soil preparation with clover sod and manure, early spring plowing 7 to 8 inches deep, careful furrow placement, seed preparation with a disinfecting rinse, seed cutting, weed control, and close cultivation. He recommends planting between April 1 and 25, using Paris green to combat pests, and harvesting by early October before market. He also covers storage conditions with ventilated bins and a cellar temperature of 34 to 40 F.
Robert May died at his home northeast of Fayetteville last Friday after three years bedridden. He leaves a wife and three sons. Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at his home by the Fayetteville Masonic order, with burial in North Cemetery. Prof. Coffin entertained residents at his boarding house Saturday night. Mrs. Nannie Newman and daughter Ruth of Wamsley Ohio visited then returned home. The Christian Sunday School opens the year with W. J. Paxton as superintendent and Rev. Allen preaching at the Christian Church next Sunday.
District Evangelist Larimore speaks at Gospel Temperance meetings in Bunker Hill January 8, Columbia January 9, Alpine January 10, Alquina January 11, Dunlapsville January 12, Lyons Station January 13, and Fairview Groves January 14. Public invited to attend. Larimore described as forcible and interesting.

Connersville’s McFarlan Carriage Co sent the state’s largest single buggy shipment, 30 cars of McFarlan Buggies bound for Texas dealers. The train ran full day through, with four labels per car, and the firm’s payroll and employment rising as orders mount. J. B. McFarlan, an early founder, remains active guiding a prosperous, year round workforce of 350 plus employees and strong regional impact.
Correspondent notes Delagoa Bay as a strategic Portuguese harbor and vital Boer supply route, its potential seizure by Britain or Boers could draw intervention. Describes geography, rail link to Pretoria, discovery by Vasco de Gama, 1502, and town founded 1867. mentions related odds and various local notes.
A pupil submitted a sentence illustrating a paradox. The line features a boy named Billy described as the soxy looking kid emerging from his mother’s pantry and appearing sheepish after wriggling.
The Sixth Congressional District Democrats met at Andre's Theatre Connersville on Tuesday the 9th. Dr White of New Castle was elected chairman with John Baughman as secretary and J E Nevin as assistant secretary. A S Jackson of Hancock County was chosen unanimously as district committeeman and endorsed for chairman of the Democratic State Committee. Speakers included Dr C A Robinson Greenfield Feltz Hancock County Elder Thomas D W McKee Senator Creager Carthage and Frank Hull Rushville.
Harrisburg Lodge No. 84 held an initiation and elected officers including Emory Hackleman N G and George Holton V G. A committee was formed to straighten the old book and settle with the treasurer. J C Rea was re elected Trustee. Rev Huff preached at the Baptist church. Local farming, health and school notes follow.
Correspondents note Jesse Austin left for Buske ness College in Indianapolis. Jerry Cole and wife near Straughne returned New Years Day from Alexandria and Tipton. Straughne youths plan a play Friday and Saturday January 12 and 13. A masked surprise party was held on Curl Boosom last Friday. Mrs Ott Hradway has been sick but is improving. Alva Cole, south of town, returned last week from Angola.
