Withycombe and Pierce Ahead for Governor Race

In Gilliam county yesterday the primary turnout was light with about 40 percent of registered voters casting ballots. Statewide returns show Withycombe leading for governor with Simpson second and Olcott third, while McNary leads Stanfield for senator two to one. Democratic ticket names Pierce for governor and West for senator. Stewart and Wright lead for representatives. Schroeder defeats Hull for county clerk.

Conservation program adopted by women groups in Gil lam County

At the County Organization Meeting in Condon on May 4 2018 the Home Economies Committee of Gil lam County Agricultural Council approved a conservation program. It covers food production poultry drying canning storage and substitution use sanitation hygiene first aid child feeding and clothing selection repair. Representatives will distribute Extension Service literature and bulletins. communities will adapt methods and coordinate with clubs granges schools churches newspapers and other agencies to widen impact.

Basket Social at Olex Nets Good Sum

The basket social and dance at Olex last Saturday drew a large crowd and raised 190 dollars. Half went to the Red Crows and the rest the Olex Home Guard fund. Condon High Graduation Draws A Night Of Praise

The Condon High School graduation concluded with a strong program at the Congregational church. Death Claims Young Girl Buried Today

Flora Maley daughter of Mr. and Mrs. W. B. Maley died unexpectedly at home from convulsions Wednesday. Funeral services were held today at 2:30 p.m. in the Grange Hall at Alville, with burial in Alville cemetery.

Car Loops the Loop Injuring Passengers but Not Seriously

County Agent J C Hawkins and Mrs Jeasie D McComb escaped serious harm when their Ford flipped after skidding on damp sand near Clem schoolhouse on the way to an agricultural meeting in Olex. Both suffered bruises and Mrs McComb sprained her arm but no severe injuries. They walked to the railroad and returned by train.

Parcel Post Social at Congregational Church Event

Next Wednesday night the Congregational church hosts a parcel post social inviting all to attend. Guests should bring parcel post packages worth at least 26 cents, children’s packages valued at 25 cents will be auctioned, and those with no packages pay admission. Proceeds go to a good cause for the organ fund.

Farm Laborers Set Meeting to Discuss Wages in Eastern Oregon

A courthouse gathering is planned for Saturday night May 25 to discuss farm labor wage scales in eastern Oregon. County Agent J C Hawkins urges all workers to attend and elect a committee to join a Pendleton meeting next month with farmers from across the region. Also noted is the death of Lewis Couture Jr the 11 month old son of Mr and Mrs Couture of Ferry Canyon whose funeral was held in Condon after burial in the local Catholic cemetery. Rev G C Wickers and family plan to move to Portland where their son Paul works for Lang & Co.

Fourteen More Will Go Last of Month
