County to discuss Liberty Loan wage scale and labor

Gilliam county prepares for the Third Liberty Loan drive with reduced individual ratings and a call for universal participation. A meeting in Condon will set wage scales, with Gov ernment farm labor expert J W Brewer and County Agent J I Hawking leading discussions on uniform wages, farm elevators, and local projects.

Civil War veteran Amon Hartman dies in Condon Oregon

Amon Hartman, Civil War veteran and Gilliam county pioneer, died March 25 in Condon at age 69. Born March 20 1849 in Adame county Illinois he served with the 1st Texas Volunteer Cavalry, fought Sheridan in the Shenandoah, was wounded near Cedar Creek and escaped Andersonville. He moved to Oregon after stints in Texas and California and leaves wife Lagen Dunn and three sons Bert Henry Edward plus a grandson in service in France. Burial by Oddfellows with Home Guard escort.

Scouts Raise Fund With Picture Show at American Theatre

The Boy Scouts held a fund show at the American Theatre last Friday to boost the national scouting fund. They collected $41 and after expenses left 14, which along with donations completes the Condon Scouts quota. Mrs W C Brown and her son returned from Portland, and Mrs J D Weed attended the Liberty Loan convention there this week.

Larchs Entertain In Honor Of Newly Married Couple

Mr and Mrs Jake Larch entertained a party of friends Sunday in honor of Mr and Mrs Ray Morgan newly married. Mr and Mrs W S Parr parents of Mrs Morgan were present along with others. A bounteous dinner was served. Mrs Larchs dinners are noted among the best. Mire Ben Esser returned Sunday from San Francisco after a weeks visit. W E Smith came home from Portland driving a new Hupmobile.

A group of grade school pupils led by Edith Turner sold Thrift Stamps totaling 95 dollars in one class, with Gladys McCarty Janie Hardie Marian Weidman James Walker Oscar Billingsley and Floyd May each reaching about 50 dollars. Mayville Folks Wed in Joyful City Ceremony

Mayville residents J R Johnson and Miss Pearl Smith wed in Condon at Judge Parker home. A Mayville delegation attended as the newlyweds return to Mayville to establish a home. Pearl Smith is daughter of F B Smith, Gilliam pioneers. Johnson helps run the family store. Several locals traveled to attend and extend congratulations.

Chautauqua Set for Condon July Fourth Visit

Chautauqua will return to Condon around June 29 to July 4 with near definite dates. The program features War lecturer Henry Warren Poor and a large collection of war photographs from Underwood & Underwood and the Associated Press. Other attractions are planned for the circuit, per a letter from International Chautauqua Association president Montaville Flowers.

Newton Brown Lands in France Good Trip

Mr and Mrs J E Brown receive a letter from son Newton describing arrival in port after a long voyage. He says the convoy was torpedoed but he and others remain safe aboard. He notes seas were rough and he felt seasick early, wants to land soon, and mentions French locals near their boat.
