County Court Receives Plans For New Bridge Over John Day

Plans prepared by the State Highway department at the request of Sherman and Gilliam counties propose a first class Howe truss bridge over the John Day at McDonald to replace the toll ferry. The design features three spans 108 feet each with a central wider span for ice jams, reinforced concrete abutments, and a 20 ton truck floor capacity. Estimated cost is 13 250 dollars, cheaper than a steel bridge.

In his final audit, Auditor J H Wilson says the county books are in good condition. He commends the officers for their diligence and careful handling of county funds and credits their offices with efficient performance for taxpayers.

Condon Local Holds Interesting Meeting

Condon Local Farmers Union met Saturday in their hall to discuss community and county topics including proposed legislation affecting farmers. One week from tonight on February 9 the drama Comrades will be presented at the American Theatre by home talent.

Frank Monroe Couey Dies in City at 27

Frank Monroe Couey died Sunday morning January 28 1917 at his home in this city in his twenty eighth year. Born June 12 1889 at Trail Fork he lived in the county most of his life. He became proprietor of a local pastime in Condon about a year before his death. He was married February 16 1916 to Mrs Mabel Baker of this city. The community extends sympathy to his widow and parents in their bereavement.

Condon Elks Organize Club in Benson Auxiliary

The Condon Elks and their wives held a meeting Sunday to organize an Elk lodge auxiliary called the Bikes Local Club of Condon. Officers elected were Mrs. F. M. Bock president, Mr. T. A. Weinke secretary, Mrs. W. S. Farr treasurer. Committees were formed to draft rules, raise funds, and solicit members. The club plans monthly meetings on the first and third Thursdays, with the first meeting at the Armory Hall featuring dancing and cards and a lunch.

Shelley's Garage Show Featuring Buick Six Film

Shelley's Garage touts a film of a Buick Six crossing Bear Valley roads to be shown at the American Theatre. The run from Los Angeles to San Francisco set a new record of 10 hours 47 minutes, beating The Lark by three hours. W. J. Mariner, a business visitor in Condon, discussed highway legislation with local merchants.

Musicale February 16 Planned for County Audience

Plans are underway for a big musical entertainment in town on Friday evening February 16. C K Pough will read the event, touted as one of the best yet in Globe. Proceeds go to the Congregational church organ fund. Pete Pattee and Perry Pattee visiting aunt in Goldendale. Mrs. Fred Mckinney of Rock Creek in Condon. A large dance is advertised for February 10 at the new Mayville hall with a three piece orchestra.

Ford Tractor Exhibition At Fry Garage

L. E. Fry displays a Ford tractor at his garage with demonstrations showing strong pulling power for farmers. The machine, a Ford car converted by a Tacoma firm, is offered at a low price and would benefit Gilliam county farms.

Condon Commercial Club backs John Day highway plan

The Condon Commercial Club meeting urged passage of road legislation favoring the John Day route through eastern Oregon. They argued it best serves internal development, connects with existing highways, and opens vast unsettled areas. A committee was named to present the resolutions in Salem.

Condon Chautauqua Dates Possibly July 2 to 8

July 2 to 8 are spoken as probable dates for the Condon Chautauqua with a one day range. J B Hurd the Chautauqua manager notes a stronger six day program and a major feature will be the Royal Venetian band. Dustin Avery of Mikkalo renewed his Globe subscription this week.

Post Office Reports Record January Receipts

The January month marked a record for the local post office since its founding with a 29 percent receipts gain. Postmaster McMorris reports issuing 581 domestic money orders totaling 6 685.23 dollars and seven cents.

Local talent presents three act play February 2 at American Theatre

Local performers at the American Theatre will stage a three act drama titled Comrades on February 2 with proceeds to the Rebekah lodge. Cast includes May Manning Lena Shannon Bess Katherine Clarke Nancy Nipper Ariel McQueen. Tickets on sale at Graves and Graves drug store.

Club Enjoys Afternoon at B A Cathey Home

The Wednesday Afternoon Reading Club met at Mrs B A Cathey's home with nine members. They studied Mexico's prehistoric age and sang solos by Mrs T A Weinke and Miss Evelyn Cathey. Refreshments were served amid pink carnations and white narcissus. Walter Russell traveled to Portland to bring home his sister recovering from illness at Ashland.

Nazarene Church Revival Continues With Evening Meetings

The Nazarene church announces revival meetings every night and most afternoons at 2:30, excluding Monday and Saturday. An invitation goes out for all to attend and enjoy times of refreshing from the Lord. Men’s Club hosts Ladies Night next Monday in the Congregational church social room. all members urged to bring their ladies. Gus Burres arrives from Ferry Canyon Turners and J C Cooney returns from a trip to Umatilla.

Public School Students Show Strong Year Grades

The pupils of Condon Public School are doing excellent work this year. Eighth grade leaders include Leona Myers 97 Stewart Hardie 91 and Albert Williams 89. Seventh grade tops list with Millard Kennedy Gladys West Arthur McMorris and Raymond Hizen. Sixth grade honors go to Orip Prugh Pearl Walker. Fifth grade features Helen Fletcher and Agnes Walker.

York Bound Over After Manslaughter Hearing

G M York arrested Monday by Sheriff Lillie on manslaughter charges. After a preliminary hearing before Justice Hollen he waived examination and was bound over to the grand jury in $2,000 bond, which York posted for release. C J Quinn of Mayville renews Globe subscription. A son was born Tuesday January 30 to Mr and Mrs J A Knight residing east of Condon.
