Inspectors praise Gilliam threshers after county tour

Government inspectors B Bennifield and C Porter toured Gilliam county with O B Robertson and J C Sturgill. They found threshers Clyde Willaby and Jim Engberg machines saving grain while some combines wasted grain. In Sherman and Wasco counties enforcement stopped several machines and one more in this county. Wheat value underscored as the motive for careful inspections.

Machines Wasting Grain Draw Inspections In Sherman County

Government threshing machine inspectors report a Sherman county unit wasted 12 pounds per 2.5 bushels, about one bushel in twelve threshed. Red Cross Makes Dresses for French and Belgian Children

The Red Cross work room opens on Tuesday and Friday with volunteers sewing dresses for French and Belgian children. All who can sew are urged to participate as aid is urgently needed. Mrs Glen Forwood, formerly Miss Pearl Schott, visits the old Rock Creek home.

Alice Shadley Burned Saving Breakfast at Fenton Hotel

Alice Shadley suffered severe burns when her dress caught fire while cooking a breakfast order at the Fenton Hotel. Evan Anderson, dining room patron, aided her but burned his hands. Dr. Cathey treated Shadley at the hospital. In other notes, W. E. McClure acquired a Holt 75 tractor for Ferry Canyon, and local travel and schooling updates are listed.

Deer Season Opens September 1 in Eastern Oregon

Deer hunting will start September 1 in eastern Oregon and run to October 1, except Malheur Harney and Klamath counties where it opened August 15 and ends October 15. Blue or sooty grouse season runs from August 15 to October 31. Prairie chicken hunting is unlawful in eastern Oregon except in Union Wasco and Sherman counties. Community notes include Randall and O’Reilly visiting Condon and P J Mulkey named principal for the coming year.

Government finds much grain wasted in threshing

Government estimates 40,000,000 bushels of wheat wasted annually in the United States by threshing crews. Inspectors visit threshing machines in Gilliam County and other grain regions to curb waste, with threshers cooperating to save grain. The report notes additional local updates and personal visits across Condon, Mayville, and surrounding towns.

Delightful Party at Blakely Home

Mrs G M Blakely entertained many young people Saturday evening at an informal dancing party. Japanese lanterns lit the porches for the dancing. The event honored Katherine Blakely who will leave for Portland later this month to attend school. Fred Wade was up from Olex Tuesday.

Gilliam County to Lead Donation to Salvation Army War Service

Gilliam county prepares to contribute to the Salvation Army War Service with Oregon's $50,000 share and a statewide drive to raise the remaining $25,000. The plan assigns 86 county chairmen under the Council of Defense to collect funds for wartime relief in Europe and in U S camps. Local sales and business notes include A B Robertson selling three complete lighting plants to Wheeler county residents.
