Fire wipes out Salisbury Beach cottages and hotels
A massive blaze at Salisbury Beach Mass on September 10 destroyed six hotels, a church, and about 160 cottages. Winds fanned flames as dynamite was used to halt the fire, leaving hundreds homeless and prompting police to guard property amid suspected incendiary origins linked to Beach Associates unrest. The Cushing House and Atlantic House fell to the flames, with extensive damage along the central beach and nearby structures.
