Burglary at Local Post Office Tells of Safe Explosion
A Friday night burglary at the Main Street post office ended with a blown safe and missing stamps. Postmaster William R. Hall found the office open Saturday before 6 am and deduced the thieves pried the steel knob with a sledge and used explosives. Blankets from Albert Jaynes’ stable and tools of William Gordon were left behind. John McPherson’s shop was entered but untouched. A nearby freight truck was wrecked by train 291, possibly to mask the noise, but authorities now suspect drunken or reckless party involvement rather than a planned robbery.
