Ultraviolet Light Boosts Hen Egg Output
The Department of Agriculture reports hens exposed to ultraviolet light lay 10 to 19 percent more eggs after five years of tests. Conducted at the Beltsville Maryland Agricultural Research Center, the underground poultry house experiments began in 1945, using short invisible light rays to raise production while also noting these rays kill bacteria. The study found the egg boost is not linked to bacteria reduction or vitamin D, and the exact properties of the light remain unidentified.
