Mr and Mrs Insen Monsen of 7 Damon Street were surprised Tuesday with a party honoring their 20th wedding anniversary. About 40 guests attended as Blanche Mildred Burlington and the couple’s three children joined in the celebration.
The Thursday bowling league opened its third year with Concord Oil defeating Snow’s champions 1419 to 1407 and Andersons beating Independents 1282 to 871. High scores included Dempsey 270 and Mushtenzy 260, with many bowlers posting 250s and above as teams Lincoln and Dover Oil also posted strong totals.
Twenty three golfers competed in the weekly golf event organized by Harold at the Country Club. Four tied for first with 39 net. notable scores included Burleigh L 40 and others such as J. H. Pickens and Russell G. 59-43, with a list of players including Rag in M. Eaton Jr and John Todd among numerous participants.
The Elm Street church with rector Iles R Peck holds services October 6 at 8 am for union, 9 30 am for Junior Lower School, and 11 am for communion and morning worship.
Parish church Lexing ton Road ward ministers sermon titled Rededication at 11 am on Sunday with Rev. Thomas A. Sinclair from the North Conference Young Federation speaking to the Ion Society at 7 o clock. The service begins at 9 46 am with worship and a school program.
Concord group of the British War Relief Society announces closing its fund drive for kitchen units on October 2. The campaign supports a Rolling Kitchen and a second unit under construction, with strong local and out of town support. Gratitude is expressed by recipients in bombed areas, noting the kitchens boost morale more than other aid, while the group will continue assisting in other ways.
Governor Leverett Saltonstall appoints local boards and HQs for selective draft service after October 16. Massachusetts has 171 board areas. Crde is area 54 including Acton, Bedford, Lincoln, Maynard, Sudbury and Wayland. Carlisle is with Pfe r rica area 11 while Lexington and Woburn join area 163.
Peter Bulkoley School juniors form four home groups and elect officers Richard Crowe Jack Lynch Martha Borden and Willis Pearson as presidents and James Dee Joseph Wheeler Carmel Ducharme and James Wood as secretaries Principal Morton R Seavey assigns an eighth grade traffic squad Helen Antognoni Kathleen McGrath David Flavin and James Walker and a seventh grade safety council Dang Tirrell Arthur Dempsey Joan Cory and Joan Litchard.
Middlesex School opened its 1940 football season with a 13 to 0 victory over Boston Trade on the local Private School gridiron. Jack Guayd scored the opening TD from the five yard line in the second period, Al Stanton added a third period score, and Robert Sundback converted with a successful drop kick for the extra point. Next Saturday Middlesex hosts Groton Academy.
Twenty players reported to coach Richar Park at Fenn School for football tryouts. Promising prospects include Worcester Meriam, Bill Fisher, Eddie Bolton, Snelling Brainard, Archie Howe, Henry Kidder, Franklin Perkins, Joe Ward, John Zahrer, and Eddie Abbot. First game slated for next week.
Concord Firemen of the Central station ran a three mile course early last Saturday afternoon responding to a garage fire near Theodore Bartkue on Lowell road near the Carlisle line. Box 58 was sounded and damage was slight, confined to one wall. The item also lists local residents with military service, school openings, club meetings, births, and planned airport funding.
Elsie E. Rose of the Board of Registrars urges potential voters to register before October 16 to avoid conflict with the conscription registration. Registration dates are October 10 at the town house and October 14 at the Harvey Wheeler School from 7 to 9 P M.
Concord-The Depot notes the Blackhawks juvenile amateur football eleven defeated the Framingham Profeit School 14 to 6. Coach Rev Fr John Sears led the rival team. Concord families Mr and Mrs Walter N Howe announce the engagement of their daughter Miss Helen Howe of Hubbard Street to William H Hewett son of Mr and Mrs William I Hewett of Wellesley Massachusetts. Miss Howe attended Concord public schools Friend Academy New Bedford Lassell College and is secretary of the Peter Pulkeley School. Hewett is connected with Framingham Homes and is taking an architecture course at Northeastern University. No wedding date set.
A rummage sale by the West Copetown Women's Club is planned for October 10 and 11 at the vacant store on Commonwealth Avenue. Doors open Thursday at 10 AM. Items include pays, books, clothes, shoes, and bric-a-brac at the sale.
The Old Pontard Chapter D A R will open its activities this Saturday afternoon at 2 45 at the Chapter House Lexington Road. Miss Clara B Cutler will preside and Mrs Wallace B Conant will head the hostesses.
At the Concord Country Club the mixed doubles saw Mrs C G Edgarton and Kenneth L Hayes beat Mrs M Harris and W Norris Tuttle 6 2 6 3. In the semi final Mrs William T M Shedden and A A Cameron won by default over Dr and Mrs Stanton Garfield. The final pitted Shedden Cameron against Edgerton Hayes, 9 7 6 1. In women’s singles Keapenees defeated Sally Foss 6 0 7 0.
Concord figures report that the Executive Committee of the Young Republican Club will meet Wednesday evening at Jeanette Christian’s Main Street home to map plans for the opening fall meeting slated for October 9. President David B. Williams to preside.
George B Clark of Lexington road left Monday for a hunting trip to Kittery Maine. Mrs Rothwell N Mac Rae of Belknap street and Mrs Elsie E Rose of Hubbard street town clerk returned Monday afternoon from a several days automobile trip to New York and the World's Fair.
Maynard high school gridiron squad hosts Stoneham in a Middlesex League game at Alumni Field at 2 30 Saturday afternoon. Maynard aims for a strong start despite two regular linemen out for the season Fred Sarvella and Jo Jo Smaha are sidelined. Coach Vodoklys shifts Magi lone and Molloy to fill gaps. Stoneham seeks its first win after three years of attempts in a competitive matchup. Season tickets available through squad members.
Maison Company filed at the rate house on September 13 to take effect October 1 with new rate schedules. About 130000 customers will see lower costs, estimated at 750000 dollars annually. The changes followed months of talks between Hoson officials and the Massachusetts Department of Public Utilities and technical meetings aimed at benefiting the most customers.
The Board of Trade will begin its fall program next Monday night with a meeting. President George W. Brothers will host a speaker from the N K Council at the gathering.
Mr and Mrs D MacRae of Monument Street and G Sherman of Blair Everett Street have returned from a two week hunting trip at Albert New Brunswick. Mr MacRae brought down a 167 pound doe.
Gerald Finan of Cambridge Turnpike resumes duties after several weeks of confinement due to injuries from an automobile collision.
The Concord Grangers met in Kiks hall on Tuesday night. First and Second degrees were conferred. Sylvia Moreau and Madeline De Mars were in charge of refreshments.

Miss Bertha Jane Crowe daughter of Shirley and George Edward Moore son of Boxboro unite in a Boxboro Town Hall ceremony. Rev Henry B Oxnard presided after a Grange meeting. Attendants include Priscilla Holden and eight bridesmaids, with ushers and a large guest list from Boxboro Shirley Acton and surrounding towns. The couple plan to reside in Boxboro after a wedding trip.

Concord Mothers Club meets next Monday night at 8 o clock in the parish house of the Trinitarian church. Morton R. Seavey principal of the Peter Berkeley school will be the guest speaker.

West Concord Girl Scouts Troop 1 set to hold its opening fall meeting this Thursday night at Fowler Memorial Library led by Marjorie Houston and Olive Foley. Troop 2 will meet Thursday afternoon after school at the same library with Mrs Edgar Rohan in charge and Mary Hanley or Margaret Condon serving as captains.
Ervin L. Bumford comes back to Concord after representing the Concord Rotary Club at the Poland Spring Maine convention held earlier in the week.
Bedford residents Mr. and Mrs. A. Blake of South Road observed their 53rd wedding anniversary at home last Friday. Married September 27, 1887 by Rev. William J. B., Mr. Blake long worked in groceries and served as town constable and road commissioner. They have two sons in Michigan, a daughter in Northampton, and seven grandchildren, all noted as active in town affairs.
At a regular meeting of the Acton Grange in the town hall past masters led the event with about seven members from other towns in attendance. Worcester County and Middlesex North Past Masters associations presented a program of movies electric guitar solos and mimes. Olga Anderson and Helen Anderson supervised refreshments. The next meeting on October 8 will initiate new members through the first and second degrees.
