Winter Arrives as Mercury Drops to 16 Degrees

Concord saw its coldest morning of the year with temperatures down to 16 degrees in outlying areas. Snow flurries were reported yesterday as motorists faced freezing conditions and forecasts warned of even colder weather ahead.

Loynd Resigns As President Of Concord Booster Club

Mrs. Katherine Downing Dies After Car Crash

Concord resident Mrs. Katherine Jennings Downing, 71, widow of Michael J. Downing, died at Emerson Hospital from injuries after an automobile accident near Lincoln two weeks earlier. A longtime Concord resident, she lived at 21 Belknap Street and led the Ladies Auxiliary of the Ancient Order of Hibernians, with active parish service at St Be’s Confraternity. Funeral services will be held Friday with a solemn high mass of requiem at St Bernard’s Church.

Concord holds funeral services Saturday for Pvt. Robert Scott Brown the town’s first World War II casualty to be returned home. The caisson procession traveled Main Street to Sleepy Hollow Cemetery with VFW Legion band and local officials in attendance. Brown born May 14 1915 in Concord lived in Chatham before enlisting prior to Pearl Harbor. He survived by his father and stepmother and was laid to rest with a firing squad and wreath at the grave.

Mission at St Bernard's Church in Concord

A two week Catholic mission is conducted at St Bernard's Church Concord by Lowell Oblate Fathers M O M L I and Leo whoa OM L guiding daily masses and services. Evening rites begin 9 45 with litany sermon and adoration for women and girls while men receive a forthcoming schedule. Children have sessions 3 30 free to end Saturday morning. Mrs Edith Weck Strom of Maynard is the former Mrs McGrath. The couple married at St Bernard's Church last November 10 and have lived in the area since. Mr McGrath works at the Concord Post Office and they have two daughters.

Thanksgiving Service in Concord to Be Held at First Parish

Concord churches plan a Thanksgiving Service November 27 at 9 oclock in the First Parish Meeting House. Rev Bradford Hastings of Trinity Church will preach. A collection will fund meals for those in need and aid the American Silent Gift relief effort, contributions accepted at local addresses.
