Superintendent Edna D Price of Emerson Hospital reports October 1942 totals. Surgical cases were 59 medical 17 obstetrical 46 with 79 treated inpatients and 4 deaths plus 2 stillbirths. Admitted 160 discharged 160 daily average 39.5 versus 31.7 in October 1941.
Matti Sarvela a 69 year old Maynard resident and former Assabet Mills weaver died Saturday after a long illness. He was born in Finland and survived by his wife Hannah four children Fred Everett and Mrs Hulda Aho of Maynard and Mrs Martha Lowden of South Acton a brother in Finland and other relatives. Funeral services were conducted at Maynard Lutheran Church Tuesday at 1 pm with Rev Bernhard Hillila officiating burial followed at Glenwood Cemetery under Fowler Funeral Service.
Sudbury's Methodist Church Ladies' Aid Society hosts a church fair on November 12 starting at 2 p.m. with many fine items for sale. A chicken pie supper with all the fixings will be served at 6:30 p.m. The event aims to make the day a great success.
Concord reports the first 4-H Club meeting of the season was held October 29 at Lowell Road hosted by Mrs. Ralph H. Howe. Officers elected include President Miriam Barthus, Vice-president Reseree, Secretary Betty Howe.
Representatives from Concord schools met to form the Junior Red Cross Council as it prepares for the November enrollment campaign. Funds will support Cod Liver Oil for needy children, a Bedford Hospital donation, and aid to destitute children overseas. Concord High School’s varsity rolled to a 27-0 win over Weston at Emerson ground, claiming their third straight victory and first since the schools began football four years ago. Key scores came from Mandrioli, O Neil, Dee, and Harwood as Concord built a 14 point lead by halftime and added two more touchdowns in the second half before a crowd of locals.
A Gardner man, Musnicki, 48, dropped dead at a Concord restaurant last Thursday while at work. Dr. O W Clark, medical examiner, ruled a heart attack. The body was moved to MacRae Funeral Home then to a Gardner funeral home. Survived by brother Joseph, with whom he lived. He had become an American citizen a year ago.
A large barn in Mrs. William Cameron's yard hosted fifty boys from the town for an after event party. They enjoyed games, hot dogs, and ice cream as volunteers funded the gathering. Local organizers included Mr and Mrs James Connolly, Chief and Mrs Michael Foley, Officer and Mrs Lawrence Roche, James Farrar, and James Wipie. Transportation was provided by Chief Foley, Officer Roche, and Mr Connolly.
Robert John Katvala 21 of Maynard Street Silver Hill is among recent graduates of the School of the Recruit at the U S Naval Training Station Newport R I. He has been selected for Navy aviation machinist mates training. Katvala is son of Mr and Mrs John Katvala and attended Maynard High School class of 1938. His brother Ure is a Corporal in the Army and worked at Union Navy Yard at enlistment.
Alfred Poyser of the U S Air Corps currently on a 14 day furlough from British Columbia visits his newborn at Emerson Hospital in Concord after traveling over the Alaskan Highway. He is identified as Maynard-Sergeant.
Edith B Bushnell Harris of Concord died Wednesday morning after a long illness at age 38. Born in Pittsburgh May 16 1904 she lived in Concord six years and was active in the Red Cross Garden Club Country Club and hospital aid society. She leaves her husband Maynard L Harris Jr 1 and Christopher 9 two brothers and her parents in New Jersey. Funeral services were held at her home with burial private at Sleepy Hollow cemetery.
Concord High cross country finished sixth at Nickerson Field in the State Carrier meet led by captain Dick Wetherbee who placed ninth. Georgie McHugh Jimmy Dee Jackie Wallace Roy McClure also scored for Concord under coach Ralph Ward as Melrose won the meet and two others joined the trip to Saugus for another invitation.
Charlotte Drury of South Acton is listed for scholastic distinction at Cushing Academy. The honor requires a B average and a college certificate in all subjects, announced by Principal P. Quimby. Thanksgiving dinner will replace a vacation on November 26 at Ashburnham House. Twenty-five names appear on the distinction roll. 55 on the office list.
Acton Mrs Alice Soule aged 69 of Boston sister of Mrs Willard M Houghton of West Acton died Monday morning in a Brighton rest home after a long illness. She leaves several brothers and sisters in Worcester Danbury Conn and Oakland Cal Funeral services were held Wednesday from the First Baptist church West Acton with Rev Arthur Twombly in charge.

Susanna H Hubbard of Nashawtle Hill marked her 94th birthday quietly in Concord. A lifelong resident and retired teacher of Concord and Boston English High School, she remains in good health, sews, knits, and reads as former pupils offer congratulations. She belongs to the First Parish Unitarian Church.
Concord-Classes were held at the State Armory on Nov 3 with map reading, litter drill, and an air raid protection lecture led by Lt. Stone. Sudbury native Stuart Edgerly Jr son of Mr and Mrs Stuart Edgerly of Maynard Road Sudbury is named on Mount Hermon School honor roll for the first period among 90 scholars in a student body of over 500 boys.
