May 29 American Legion will weed May 30 Memorial Day observances proceed with a parade from Roosevelt School. The line includes United Concert Band colors a firing squad and veterans groups. Cemeteries at Glenwood St Bridget s receive wreaths and garlands. Memorial bridges will be decorated and a wreath placed on the Honor Roll. Reverend speakers and a Star Spangled Banner service close the program.
May 29 event hosted by Ladies of the Past Presidents Club of Hof St George at Odd Fellows hall included a 6 PM banquet, entertainment, and speeches by Mrs Tennent Mrs Hal Lawrence and others. Performances featured Leona Leach and Miss Thin in a play with local participants from Hudson Stow and nearby towns.
Wincote Baldwin captured the H. H. Tournament title at the Beard County Club with a total of 8 points. Runners up included James B. 48, Harry Shelling 46, and Hubert W. J. Jr. 40, among others in a crowded leaderboard.
A large crowd attended Memorial Sunday services at the Maynard Methodist Church with Frank J. DeMars Post and Legion Auxiliary officers present. Troop 4 Boy Scouts escorted to the 10:45 morning service, and a "The Next War" sermon followed by special choir music. Evening Boy Scout service featured a sermon on "Playing square with Scoutie" and an orchestra of Scouts performed.
The Concord Lodge of Elks named Alfred Bierenbroadspot Edward Cox of Bedford and Lowell George of Concord as delegates to the State Convention June 3 4 and 5 at Northampton. Alternates named include Mr Purcell of Bedford K Paul Hillinder and Wilber G Clark of Maynard. Mothers Day exercises were held by Exalted Ruler William L Fitzpatrick and officers. Plans for Flag Day on Sunday June 10 were discussed. Ira Morsey of Lowell presented South Africa hunting photos in Ellis Hall.
The sale of Mrs Frederick K. Shaw's household goods Monday drew regret from many friends who acknowledge the community’s loss of a longtime contributor. Shaw plans to reside in Cambridge, and well wishes accompany her departure.
John J. Hanley a Concord native born May 5 1876 died at his Thoreau Street home May 23 in his fifty third year. He received full military honors at burial from St Bernard's Cemetery with pallbearers from Corp Ralph P Hosmer Camp and James J Mansfield Post and a firing squad from Co H 182nd Infantry M N G. He served in the Spanish War marching to Porto Rico and later worked with Boston Elevated and Hanley and Goulding Painters. He is survived by his widow Mary Sweeney and brothers Thomas J and Edward W.
May 25 in South Acton Congregational Church vestry honored Miss Carolyn Barker daughter of Mrs F A Barker with a large decorated gift basket social hour and lunch. Attendees included Misses Gertrude Thompson Marion Forbes Ruth Fullenton Carolyn Tuttle Elada Barker Gladys Christofferson Ella n Christofferson Olga Mongen Mil dred Christianson and many relatives and friends.
South Sudbury May 29 Mr and Mrs Frederick L Gile and family of Allston Mass opened their Parmenter Garrison Farm summer home for the season Mrs Gile formerly Miss Georgia Littlefield head hostess at the Wayside Inn in South Sudbury and known locally Her husband is proud she is a direct descendant of Colonel Prescott commander in chief at the battle of Bunker Hill from start to finish The Littlefield family in Wells Maine provided eleven officers in the Revolutionary War.
Portland Maine choral group touring from Springfield sang for Henry Ford at the Wayside Inn over weekend. Ford and guests enjoyed the performance as an orchestra from Detroit provided entertainment for the Inn party. Lovetts, Detroit instructors, gave a dancing lesson to Mary Lamb School and Trade School children before the party departed for Detroit.
Concord Parent Teacher Association names new officers at the last meeting with Mrs Bradford M Kingman as president and Mrs Caleb Wheeler Jr as vice president. Other officers include Mrs James J Loughlin secretary and Mrs Percevil Petersen treasurer. Executive board members are Mrs F S Thompson Mrs Earle Parks and Mrs Philip T Flavin. Rolfe Bradbury of North Anton Eaten We Jones returns from the West after property improvements and business in Concord Road.
Ralph P. Hosmer Camp 55 U S W completes plans for Memorial Day. A morning detail will motor to Sudbury Maynard Acton and Littleton to decorate graves. They will also decorate four graves at the Massachusetts Reformatory Concord Junction. Lincoln members will decorate in Lincoln. After luncheon in Concord vestry, they join in parade and grave decoration in Concord visiting Sleepy Hollow and St Bernard's cemeteries. Archers will be served supper by the Legion Auxiliary after the parade.
Community plans a June 26 event for Mr. and Mrs. George H. Clarke. A reception will be held at the town hall from 3 to 5 and again from 7 to 10. Committee chairs include E. Norman Bowry Carlton Ellmins Roy Hawes Albert Tallant Mrs E P Stiles Mrs Leon Hawes and Rev Elbridge C Whiting.
Town Hall hosted a Memorial Sunday service on May 27 with all local organizations represented by flags on the platform. Senator Joseph R. Cotton of Lexington delivered the speech while Mrs. John S. Blake accompanied at the piano. The audience joined in singing America the Beautiful and Star Spangled Banner.
A Marlboro gathering on Thursday May 24 featured Mrs Maude Gutteridge as president and Mrs Beatrice Jordan as vice chair. Miss Carrie Holden recounted the 1818 founding of the original society while Miss Aili Hermanson and Miss Jane Boicourt performed piano solos and a duet. Rev Stanley Addison stressed shared aims, with reminiscence of Mrs Amory Maynard and the Ladies Benevolent Society. Tea was served by Mrs Essa Case and others.
In Maynard on Sunday, St Bridget's parish held its annual May procession with 400 children, led by cadet bands and the Children of Mary Corps, escorting a first communion class. A floral crown was placed on the Blessed Virgin, with Rev. Edward Crowley and Rev. Charles Donahue officiating amid a large gathering.
Seven Concord High School musicians from R Norman Hudspeths orchestra joined 200 top high school players from New England in the All New England High School Orchestra. They performed at Mechanics Building before a large audience and radio listeners. Concord was represented by first violins Albert Bertelsen Velma Hinman Catherine Byron and others including Katherine Berry George Walker Henry Helsher and Joseph Bartolomeo. The group stayed at the Statler Hotel for two days of extended rehearsals and performances under Mrs Hinman.
The Concord Art Association summer show at the Concord Art Centre on Lexington Road opened last week. It features the permanent and loaned collection plus an array of works on view through the late autumn months.
Robert Humes resumes duties at the Massachusetts Reformatory after a two week vacation. He rejoined staff and resumed regular operations at the facility.
CRT Maynard May 29 reports the Epworth League gathering at Odd Fellows Hall with attendees from Clinton Maynard and Hudson. Dr Charles B Carroll welcomed guests as Rev W F Keonsen of Clinton and other ministers spoke. Maynard League won a cup for highest three month attendance. supper followed under Mrs O C Brechsler. Officers elected: Everett Ricker president Edith McAuslin first vice president J Philbrick Anna Benson secretary Edwin Carlton Jr treasurer.
Maynard T T will play a strong team at Crowe Park next Sunday afternoon. Walter Desmond of Ayer, formerly of Maynard, was elected president of the Middlesex County League in place of John Boardman of Concord, who resigned, at a special meeting in Forge Village Monday night. Joel White represented Maynard at the meeting. A local baseball meeting will decide if the team remains in the League. Hazel I Morehouse, a golf champion, returns with honors after Daytona Beach season and is at Swastika Villa residence.
