Citizens debate a proposed reform plan and tax revaluation with opposition citing higher costs while supporters claim civic progress. Officials promise study of implications as criticisms surface about the town manager system and public services amid uncertain turnout.
An invitation to a Wednesday meeting for WestCon members and professionals lists speakers including Forbes Rob Mandrido and James E Erickson. The event will discuss purchase of land from Mid Hawthorne Lane and related plans.
Theodore Nelson of Northfield Vermont has been unanimously chosen as Concord town manager after 35 applicants. He will assume duties July 9 at age 28, bringing a background from Old Orchard Beach Dover Bethelmont and Northfield. Nelson and his wife plan to settle in Concord and meet town boards and committees soon.
West Concord Mr and Mrs Krist Andersen of 385 Main Street marked their 25th wedding anniversary with a surprise visit from about 60 friends and relatives from New York Wellesley Acton and Concord. A testimonial followed with flowers and gifts. Krist recalled a past surprise during his town selectman tenure. Also noted are Greater Lowell cadets at Lowell Technological Institute and the Air Force ROTC with 295 cadets currently in the corps.
Concord announces Memorial Sunday services at Trinitarian Church on Walden Street led by Rev. Robert H. Barber at 11 a.m. May 27 with military, veteran, and scout groups forming for the parade. Memorial Day Parade and exercises on May 30 will have Maj. Norman L. Scherer as marshal and Michael Gormely as chief of staff. Concord School Band to lead the second division.
Concord High welcomed Mr. Williams of the Esso Company on May 8 to discuss petrochemicals. He described oil derivatives from lipstick to weed killers and miracle fabrics, and conducted experiments, presenting a scientific yet humorous talk that engaged the students.
Concord Chapter Order of DeMolay calls a regular meeting Friday May 18 at 7 30 PM at the Masonic Temple with whiff and collation. On Monday May 21 the DeMolay Mothers Club holds a 6 30 PM meeting at the temple with a covered dish supper and a film followed by discussion.
Concord Emblem Club thanks local merchants and Elks for generous prize awards at Embola. The group meets tonight at 8 at Elks Hall with Mrs. Mary Venti presiding. Installation of new officers set for Sunday May 20 at 2. Join in the May mental health campaign.

Concord Court Our Lady C D A No 1116 hosts its annual spring communion breakfast on Sunday May 20. Mass at Our Lady Help of Christians at 8 30 am led by Mrs Julia LeSage grand regent then breakfast at Monument Hall expected to draw over 100. Rev Edward Sullivan circus priest from Roxbury guest speaker. Co chairs are Mrs Margaret Dalton and Mrs Jennie Melisi. Offcers’ installation may be June 12 with mass in May 27 at Boston.
Concord High announces that students Alice Cooke, Loretta Cullinane, Martha White, Douglas Sinclair, and Mark Crowell have been accepted to colleges and universities including William and Mary, Fitchburg State Teachers College, Simmons College, MIT, and Northeastern. Classmates and faculty extend best wishes for future success.
Julian W. Ballou announces five public hearings on elementary school facilities in Concord. Meetings scheduled at Wells Hall Memorial Auditorium and Thoreau and Alcott School venues run from May 25 to June 22 at 8 p.m. open to all residents with focus on specific schools and the Bedford Street and Ponderill Road proposals.
Concord resident Mrs. Helen K. Smith of Old Marlboro Road has been drawn for traverse jury duty at Middlesex Superior Court on June 4, according to the board of selectmen.
Concord Massachusetts Senator Richard I. Furbush, the only leader to serve three straight terms, will speak at the Lions Club supper and meeting at Howard Johnson's on Tuesday May 22 his talk titled Affairs of State. President Rudolph W. Currier will preside and a state convention report will be given. A five member delegation led by John E. Holt will attend the Swampscott convention May 18 to 20.
Concord High seniors plan for class night class trip to Nantasket and class day dance on June 2. The graduation chorus is rehearsing to complete its schedule, with the ceremony promising to be a grand sendoff for CHS seniors.

Emerson Hospital’s capital fund drive has reached 414000 dollars, 107 percent of the 385000 minimum goal. Concord Sudbury and Wayland drive progress continues as volunteers seek remaining gifts to begin the hospital’s west wing construction this summer for urgent community needs.
Jeffrey Derby seven months old twin son of Mr and Mrs Richard A Derby of 5 Bedford Street died suddenly Wednesday noon. Police and firemen arrived quickly after the mother alerted a neighbor. Dr Howard E Robinson medical examiner pronounced death after a half hour. Last rites were given at St Bernard's Church. The body was taken to Dee Funeral Home. He leaves a twin brother James and sisters Linda Roberta and others.
Thomas J. Mc Breen age 19 of Longstreet has been advanced from seaman recruit to seaman apprentice in the Lowell Naval Reserve after passing an examination run by the First Naval District. Lieut Rupert N. Lord, officer in charge, announced the promotion from Naval Reserve Surface Division 1-19 at the Bedford Avenue Training Center. McBreen joined the Lowell unit in June 1955.
Concord announces its quarterly Chamber of Commerce meeting on Monday May 21 at 8 oclock in the Alcott School Auditorium. President William Locke and executive director George E Erickson will lead with Clarence Woodman as guest speaker on Present Retail Merchandising. Wives and guests welcome.
