In Concord a local pastor known as Jack Wallace faces scrutiny over allegedly running mile races for Concord High. Community buzz centers on recognition for Wallace and the Sheehan Memorial, with residents noting fire alarm issues and local shop support signals.
The Concord Choral Festival gathered over 2000 voices from Concord Academy Concord High School and Middlesex School on May 4. They performed seven movements of the Bach B minor Mass under Norma Sapp Charles Secemign and Hur Motter Lamb.
Otis M. Whitney, former representative, is opposed by three candidates for the Governor's Council Third District. Republicans Blake has withdrawn leaving Whitney opposed by Edmund J. Cheney of Lowell and Perlie Dyer Chase of Boston. One Democrat Paquette of Watertown and Lombard of Boston remain in their party race.
Miss Maude Wheeler Tompkins of Concord became the bride of Frederick Kempton Craig of Newtonville in a ceremony at the Unitarian Church. The bride wore a white bengaline gown with a seed pearl cap and three yard veil. The reception followed in the church vestry. The couple will reside at 61 Page road Newtonville.
Concord notes First Lt. Cuptis Billings son of Mrs Elise G. Billings 72 Monument street has been separated from the service. He recently began terminal leave at Fort Devens after completing his tour of duty. Billings is the son of the late Lieutenant Commander Edmund Billings U S Navy the first Concord man killed in action in world war two.
St Bernard’s and Our Lady’s Catholic parishes plan a nationwide food drive for starving Europe and the Far East next week under Archbishop Richard J. Cushing. Donors may bring foods to Monument Hall daily 7:30 to 8:30 p m and leave them at the Our Lady’s rectory.
Concord notes a private funeral service held Tuesday at Woodlawn Chapel Acton Center for Mrs Martha Mekkelsen 85 formerly of this town who died Saturday night at her Carlisle home Rev John Elmo Wallace Trinitarian Congregational Church officiated and she was buried at Steepy Hollow cemetery She was a Norway native who came to the United States over 50 years ago and lived in Carlisle the last five years She is survived by one daughter Miss Ida Mekkelsen and several grandchildren.
Mr. and Mrs. Joseph E. Slemens observed their golden anniversary at the home of their son-in-law and daughter Mr. and Mrs James C Bemis in West Concord. Married May 4 1896 in Somerville the couple reside with their family and have five grandchildren and four great grandchildren.
The Hawthorne Chapter O E S postpones its regular meeting to next Wednesday May 15 at Masonic Temple due to a conflict with area chapter events. A home cooked supper at 6 30 will precede initiation of several new candidates.
Malcolm McCabe executive secretary of the Retail Growers Association Massachusetts spoke at the Concord Board of Trade meeting on black market control of meats and other foods. He urged Senate support for the OPA to sustain price controls amid shortages as annual summer closure discussions were deferred until October.
The Concord Chorus of over 100 voices will perform Brahms Requiem in Memorial season observance at 8:30 P.M. on May 28 in the Veterans Hall. Tickets are available through chorus members and later at Richardson's Drug Store the Music Shop and the Gift Shop in West Concord. The combined chorus has rehearsed for months under Miss Nancy Loring and Mrs D Ripley Gage.
Chief Tuttle unveils the 1946 staffing for Central and West Concord stations effective May 1. Twelve call men at each site with ten permanent men combined. John Olsen remains West Concord deputy chief and Dennis Horne leads Central station. Assigned captains include Harry Patterson at Central Engine No. 1 and Robert Prentiss at Engine No. 2, with multiple ladder units and a full roster of permanent officers led by Chief Tuttle.
Frost last Thursday and Friday cut about 20 percent of the Nashoba apple crop in Concord with temperatures around 29 degrees. Other nearby towns saw higher damage as apple blossoms advance to full pink in the belt.
Concord notes annual meeting of Old Chapter D A R electing Mrs Hoyt Cortary as regent for the coming year. New officers include Mrs Victor E Peppard vice regent and several others filling secretary treasurer chaplain and director roles. State meetings slated for October with Ocean House Swampscott as host location.
