Concord High School lost 3-2 to Stoneham after fighting to stay in the game Tuesday’s playground clash. Casey led with three hits while Cook added two. Tompkins allowed seven Stoneham hits as Concord produced three runs on timely hits and fielding miscues.
Miss Sophie Subastynowicz daughter of Mr and Mrs Subastynowicz became the bride of Steve Owicz of Paterson New Jersey at Casimir's church Sunday morning. The ceremony was by John F Dziek pastor with Helen Serbastynowicz of Boston as maid of honor in green and pink roses. Kochnowicz and Jenpje were pink rose bridesmaids, Ibacz was best man. The bride wore white and carried a harmonizing bouquet. guests included Maynard and others. The couple plan a honeymoon then reside in Paterson. The groom is employed.
A parish whist social at the Cooperative hall for St Ives Church raised funds. Prizes were won by several residents including Mrs Helen Hinds, Teresa Mur Gadys Howe, and Mrs Noble J Morton. Names listed among attendees include Mrs Susie Shee, Mrs Peter White, and Mrs Annie Scully.
The annual Woman's Club luncheon and business session are planned for next Tuesday at St George's church hall. Reports from officers and members will be presented and Dr. Payson will speak as Education Commissioner. Mrs Raymond Hooper leads the program with James P King also on the program.
The Young Cooperators held another United Coop building party Monday night awarding prizes to Lauria Ranny Mark Mrs C New y Koivu William O'Don nés Ryan Ethel Crownier Jerson Mr and Mrs Wright Jantti Helen Kinmola Icelonis Mary Tobin Ida Mrs William O'Donnell Hipwell and Winifred Watt.
The Concord Musical Club gathered April 25 at Mrs Horace D Williams home on Monument Street. Officers were reelected and a fund in memory of Mrs Kugapie Mavie Foss was created to benefit the Music Centre. Performers included Claire Kent Ruth Westman Marian Parker and others from the club.
A three act musical comedy Breezing Along will be presented at Parker Street hall May 18-19 as a high school benefit. Director Miss Eleanor Merritt leads a cast of prominent local talent with rehearsals starting immediately. Aimed for a successful show, one date may be kept open for attendance.
The Hibernians upset the Knights of Columbus to win the Concord season championship at Monument Hall. Concord Council AOH finished with 869 points, 15 ahead of the Knights and 92 ahead of the Red and Gun Club, after a final sprint that secured 30 wins in 35 rounds. A championship banquet will honor the Hibernians.
The Middlesex League of Sportsmen met at the Maynard Red Gun Club last Thursday. Lawrence Brewer of Waltham was elected president with Ross Hall as vice president N A Angell as secretary treasurer and an executive board including Joseph Kelley Joseph McKay Lawrence Stephens Earl Leach. Charles Woodard Natick was named delegate to the State Sportsmen Council and Harold Bradberry Cambridge alternate with Samuel McGoal Brookline as legislative councillor. A social hour followed during which Rep Frank C Sheridan spoke on hunting fishing and outdoor life.
Middlesex School debaters beat Groton School in Eliot Hall. The affirmative supported recognizing the United Soviet Socialist Republics Without Delay. Debaters included John C. Develin, Lawrence Rom, Stuart Wyeth, Theodore C. Osiborne as alternate for Middlesex, and Franklin D. Roosevelt, Cornelius Roosevelt, Benson Sloan with John Roosevelt as alternate for Groton.
A Maynard beer dealer reports a seven dollar loss after one month in the business. After accounting for a ten dollar license, two dollar trucking license and five dollar federal tax, profits are wiped out and capital invested is at seven dollars. The dealer plans to continue hoping warmer weather improves profits.
Reynold C Ellis of Concord Road Lincoln struck Edwin Aho of Florida Road on Waltham Street about 9 30 Sunday evening. Aho was taken to Emerson Hospital with injuries to his right leg cuts and abrasions and a dislocated jawbone. Dr R E Hooper treated him. Kalervo Kansanniova of Beacon Street accompanied the injured man and was uninjured. The report found no negligence by either driver or injured man.
Sam Bachrach of Maynard a University of Maine senior received a loving cup as the college’s champion heavyweight boxer during an assembly. Jack Dempsey and Max Schmeling presented the award during their Maine tour. Bachrach plans to study medicine after reportedly retiring from boxing.
Maynard Citizens Committee plans to sponsor 250 gardens on 6 to 8 acres for unemployed residents. Last year $600 financed fertilizer and seeds. over $2000 worth of food was produced. Contributions to Harold Morgan at Maynard Trust Company.
Maynard L. E. Smith and G. H Foss outline a Retail Merchants Credit Association with bureaus in Framingham Milford Waltham Watertown Quincy Brockton and Concord. Each bureau gathers detailed customer data including age occupation salary and credit history to assess willingness and ability to meet obligations and aid quick, confidential information sharing among members.
Corporal Aaron Jones Fletcher of South Acton celebrates his 92nd birthday marking a life of Civil War service from joining a militia in Acton in January 1861 to guarding the Aqueduct bridge and serving in the 26th Massachusetts and later under Sheridan. He worked as a stone mason and railroad inspector and remains active at his Martin Street home with his daughter’s family in Acton.
Emerson Hospital hosts a multi town rummage sale to benefit the hospital. Acton Bedford Carlisle Concord Stow and others donate goods and money with drop off at the Late Armory on Friday May 5 and Saturday May 6. For pickups call Mrs. Charle G bk zarton.
The Gilbert and Sullivan operetta Pirates of Penzance opens tonight with a colorful cast and elaborate costumes. Ed Carlton Jr. leads the pirate band with Richard Hiwery as king, while Frances Wherlein plays the nurse. Major General Lanley arrives to claim the girls, and the plot ends with the pirates praised as noble.
Maynard Rev. John Dziok pastor of St. Casimirs church was honored with a surprise birthday party by the parish youth at the Assabet Country Club. Alex Kulevich served as toastmaster and presented a reading lamp. The event highlighted the pastor s six years of leadership and his work with parish sports and a gymnasium.
At 10 40 Friday morning West Concord firefighters responded to a long run to extinguish a blaze near the slaughter house site. The report notes a large fire and extended emergency effort by local units.
More than 140 Hunger Marchers paraded through Maynard last Saturday evening. They were hosted by the Unemployed Council of Maynard at the Russian Educational Society Hall on Powdermill road, given food and lodging before continuing to Boston. Column 2, originating in Springfield, joined by groups from Worcester Gardner Templeton and Fitchburg, traveled through Clinton and Hudson, receiving parade permits in the three towns. They left Maynard at 11 and pressed on to Waltham Cambridge and Boston where a delegation was to meet the governor. Principal speakers included Max Weiss, Captain Joseph Jackson of Springfield and Werner Maki of Fitchburg. The march carried banners such as Long Live the Working Class and No Dropping from Welfare for Refusing to go to Forced Labor Camps. Five aims were unemployment insurance funded by employers and state government, immediate cash relief for all unemployed, no forced labor, no evictions or foreclosures, and no discrimination against foreigners or people of color.
A large Colonial Hall audience enjoyed a Minstrel show produced by the Odd Fellows under the Maynard Chamber of Commerce for Kimerson hospital. William E. Duckworth directed. Miss Francis Archer accompanied. Anika Korpi on saxophone. Ralph Jones served as interlocutor. The program featured multiple songs, solos, a saxophone number, a tap dance, and closing choruses. Chamber committee members were James Kt. Priest Rev. Matthew A. Vance and Joseph P. Dineen.
The Colonial Club of Maynard fields a strong nine including Joe Piecewicz Mike Zapareski Vedoklys Bill Johnston Paul Connor Bill Kitowicz Red Duggan and other ex school and college stars. They challenge Harvard TT South Acton West Acton Sudbury Marlboro Sons of Italy and seek home and home games contacting Tim Moynihan at Colonial Gas Station Maynard MA.
Miss Ann Bellows daughter of Dr and Mrs John Bellows of Concord street was installed as vice president of the Y W C A at BU Friday evening. She is a sophomore in the school of Practical Arts and Letters and has been elected secretary of the Athletic Association and chairman of the Freshman Hop committee.
Our Gang at the State House toured with Rep Frank C Sheridan receiving welcomes from Gov Joseph B Ely and Sen George Moyse. They viewed both chambers and the hall of flags then toured the archives library and cemetery visits. The group included Joan Turner Irene Carey Ruth Hodgess Irene Lemoine Catherine Sheridan and others supervised by Mrs Helen Sheridan and Dorothy Marsden. Their bus trip was in Alton White's bus as they prepare for a May 9 Legion Auxiliary party.
Maynard Selectmen grant beer licenses extended until June 30 for wholesalers and dispensers with $10 per month fees. A one year permit and rate will be set after June 30. Names of licensed wholesalers and dispensers listed. other liquor related licenses awaiting distribution. Stores opened Sunday warned to obtain license before the coming Sunday or face closure by police.
Several residents from Maynard attended a Monday evening bridge whist social organized by the Bessie L. Marshall Post S.W. Ve at Marlboro.
