Salvation Army Drive Opens With Dinner in April

Concord and nearby towns begin the Salvation Army annual appeal with a dinner meeting April 9 at 6 30 p m in the First Parish church vestry for top leaders and volunteers. The appeal runs April 7 to 19 with Mrs Walter K Shaw as special gifts division chair and a network of district captains and regional chairs across Concord West Concord and Carlisle.

Crowley Rites Held At Church For 83 Year Old

A solemn funeral mass for the late Crowley aged 83 was held at Our Lady of Christians Church. He died at General Hospital after a long illness. A World War I Navy Yard veteran, he was an electrician and former store manager and member of the Elks Lodge. He leaves a wife, two young children, a sister, and a cousin in Milton.

Laymen's League Meeting at First Parish Unitarian

The Laymen's League meets this Thursday at 6:45 PM in the vestry of First Parish Unitarian. Raisz will lecture on a topic related to making, presenting in the evening discussion.

New Concord Company H Federalized At Armory Ceremonies

Concords new National Guards unit Company H was federally recognized at a Monday evening ceremony at the State Armory. Commanded by Capt John W Hagerty Jr the 19 enlisted men and 2 officers include ten locals and seek additional recruits. Lt Col Benton Major Cannody presided with guest speeches by Col Daniel Hogan Lt Col Smithers and Capt Burleigh Pratt.

Scouts Collect Record Amount Of Waste Paper

Concord and West Concord Boy Scouts held a town wide paper drive last Sunday. Secretary J Edward Holt supervised the effort, yielding about 20 tons of paper valued at roughly 400 dollars. The Scouts thank the volunteers and truck owners who aided the drive.

Carew Named To Teaching Roster At Concord School

Walter Carew of Medford, a former all round athlete from St. Bonaventure College, was appointed to the teaching roster at Concord Public School. He fills the vacancy left by William T. Boland who recently resigned to take a position in Washington. Carew, noted for wartime service, was appointed by Sept. Aarph D. McLeary and may assist athletic events at Concord.

Easter Seals Drive Held Locally For Cranial Bay State Society

Concord residents are reminded that Easter Seals are on sale to benefit the Bay State Society for the Crippled and Handicapped. Parker and Trowbridge of Worcester lead this year, with a Marlboro district committee and members including B Frye, Mrs. Burton, Lippard, and Morse. Returns go to listed Marlboro volunteers.

Loughlin Celebrates 42nd Anniversary as Court Clerk

Loughlin marks his 42nd anniversary as clerk of the court on April 1 1947. Appointed in 1905 he has served under four judges including the late Keyes and Howard A Wilson, and resides at 371 Main Street West Concord. He is a prominent local figure and eminent attorney.

Firemen Busy With Grass and Brush Alarms

Concord firemen from Central and West Concord stations fought 13 grass and brush fires over the weekend. By Monday the department had answered 76 alarms for the current year.

Locke Named Chairman of Red Cross Home Service

At a March 19 Executive Board meeting the Red Cross unanimously appointed William D. Locke as chairman of the Home Service Committee. Locke succeeds Mrs Charles Manion and will work with a supporting team to aid veterans, assist disability claims, and advise on financial aid.

Concord Appoints Maurice McWalter Associate Justice of District Court

Robert F Bradford names Maurice McWalter of 87 Main Street as new associate justice of Concord District Court to replace Judge Edward B Caiger who resigned. McWalter, a Boston University Law School graduate admitted in 1937, will work under Judge Pierre A Northrup and has six years experience with Middlesex County District Attorney. He and his wife Jean have four children and he plans to keep a private practice in Concord.

Lions Picture Program Called Off at Concord

The Concord Lions Club canceled a planned Veterans Building screening titled Adventure by Miral Byrd's expedition America due to Navy clearance issues and prior commitments.
