Bedford Bus Fare Set at 15 Cents and Token Move Ended
The state public utilities commission approved a straight 15 cent cash fare on Middlesex and Boston bus lines with token use discontinued. The Bedford area line serves Beaford Lexington Concord Billerica and other communities. The increase aims to add about 207000 dollars yearly for costs including recent employee gains after last spring's 46 day strike. The strike cost 250000 in revenue and 125000 in wages and reduced patronage by about 30 percent. The 21.8 percent rise may cut patronage further about 14 percent, said president John H Walsh of Waltham. The DPA kept town-line ticket sales between Concord Center or Billerica Center and Bedford Depot and between Bedford Center and Lexington Center, for public convenience.
