Maynard and surrounding towns greet guests including Mary Ward and Grace O'Brien. Naval Reserve members Dana Jones and Alice Peterson return home for furloughs and colors, while John Gibbons and Ralph Casey report for duty. Community events include a sleigh ride by the high school freshmen and a scouts despatch program aiding public information literature.

On February 4 1918 the post office adopts a 6 45 a m to 6 45 p m schedule with specified incoming and outgoing mail times. Mails arrive at 7 00 a m 9 00 a m 12 10 p m 2 80 p m 3 40 p m and depart at 8 20 a m 12 45 p m 3 00 p m 5 30 p m 6 10 p m and 6 35 p m Postmaster James Kinsley notes the changes.
The Whitcomb property at Boxboro formerly the Edward Wetherbee place burned Thursday night between five and six thirty o'clock. A defective chimney caused the blaze. There was little chance to save the structure but residents saved almost all contents.
Reverend Frederick N. Rutan of Maynard Congregational preached at the Baptist church Sunday morning delivering an interesting discourse. The evening union meeting was led by H. Benjamin Smith. Next Sunday morning Reverend Mr. Missirian of Boxboro will preach.
Emily Nagle visited Lowell over the weekend while Mrs Edson Baird spent days there last week. William Rowitzer returns after illness. Gertrude Hull and Nettie Baird started work in Lowell. L C Congregational church group meets Miss Alma Stowell Thursday at 2 30 p m. Coburn Richardson visits Maynard Street relative Elizabeth Richardson. Reverend Barker attended American Board Institute meeting in Witchburg. Henry Capelle and others fished on mill pond. Mrs George Hodgen returns from Wollaston. Acton council plans a member family supper event. teachers to prepare abstracts for government work at Ayer. Fishermen reported 29 pickerel caught first day. Walter Young, 2 1 2 pounds. second day 18 more. Aaron Tuttle 1 1 2 pounds. Charles Sherry home from Squanum with work on new buildings and a head wound from a maul.
Last Saturday from 2 to 5 pm a group of about 20 young friends celebrated Erald Hopkins turn thirteen at the home of Mr and Mrs Carl Flint. Games and light refreshments were enjoyed and Erald received many pretty presents with his mother Mrs Hopkins and sister Ruth in attendance.
Mrs. Fred Elser visited her husband at Camp Devens on Sunday. A. W. Rogers and Mrs. Rogers from Waltham called on friends in the village. Mr. and Mrs. Howard Newton attended the funeral of an out of town friend Thursday. Miss Beth Hall from Framingham with a friend was with her parents on Sunday. Large quantities of boards are shipped away by buyers of the Goodnow lot. Howard C. Burr and team along with the state forester trim trees on the highway to Marlboro. Mrs. D. C. Jones, long ill with pneumonia, is better and hopes for full recovery.
The fuel administrator notes peat use is not new here. Large amounts were burned years ago as wood and coal were scarce. With peat abundant and wood coal costly, a revival may occur if supplies remain limited.
Williard Newsham reports from France that the horse he rode was severely wounded and had to be killed, a decision that grieves his father Thomas Newsham. The note conveys family sorrow over wartime sacrifices.
Otis H. Forbush announces a two day sale of 50 registered Holstein Friesian cattle from the Overlook farm of C F Rich West Medway Mass followed by a second regional sale with consignments from New York Connecticut Vermont Massachusetts and New Hampshire. The auction will be held in a new steam heated pavilion seating nearly 300 with lunch and telephones. Train schedule and transport details provided.
