In Concord the Enterprising Chronicle enters its 68th year with a weekend run mostly smooth amid mishaps. Highlights include Rotary’s 50th anniversary plans, Beacon Hill legislators in new terms, the county fire department’s busy period, and local civic notes.
The Concord Rotary Club luncheon featured T J Bartlett as guest speaker with a list of attendees including Baker John J Bent Rene ger W Bruce Ptnne Maynard Stuart Allen Rohan Mount Dora and others. The event was held at Howard Johnsons and referenced a Canadian Wild tale.
Attorney General F Fingold of Concord to be guest speaker at a Monday dinner for the Big Sister and Jewish Brother Associations of the Boston Club. The event highlights community work and local leadership.
Two local youths were rescued from drowning after thin ice broke at Warner's Pond near Commonwealth Avenue. Richard Loynd and Charles Vaillant, both teens, were pulled to shore by West Concord firefighters using ladders and a boat and treated at Emerson Hospital before release.
Concord area unit 182nd Infantry receives an Excellent rating for a two week field training period at Camp Drum New York. Maj. Gen. Edgar C. Erickson presented the honor to officers and enlisted men. Indoor rifle team gears up for state match on January 31. Lt. William H. Johansen Jr. transfers to Company E Wakefield. New enlistees James H Erickson and Francis Sokolowski named. Reenlistments by Sgt. Chester Rapson SFC Thomas G. Johansen and Sgt. Robert Bumford noted.
Concord brief reports Dewey Jr 38 of Simon Willard road and Mark Ackerman 26 Lexington were injured in a South Carolina crash and hospitalized with broken ribs and internal injuries. Langdon Cheeves died after the collision that involved a Dewey & Almy Chemical company trio on a business trip.
The Bureau of Mines developed a caliper that threads through two inch tubing and expands to measure holes up to 36 inches in diameter.
The Concord High talent show, enjoyed by students before vacation, will be repeated for the public on Saturday evening January 8 at 8 15 in the school auditorium. A date to attend is urged.
Concord firemen closed the year with 272 alarms and 294 ambulance calls, both new highs. The previous all time alarm high was 262 and ambulance calls topped 182 in 1953, with 245 alarms in 1952 and 149 ambulance runs.
Concord Concord-Court Our Help of Christians chapter meets Tuesday January 11 at 8 oclock in Church Hall. Mes Flora Clyne presides as grand regent with speakers Mr and Mrs Markus of England and Rev Fr Donlon. They discuss Spain France and Italy and announce plans for February 15 birthday party at Monument Hall with the state chaplain as guest speaker after dinner.
A Christmas season party for Beth Googins, hosted by Mr and Mrs Frank J Googins at the Colonial Room on December 29, drew about 50 young guests. Gene Jones of TV fame plus Brenda Ball performed with accompanist W E Smith, then Jones led a talent show. Attendees included the Googins and the Jenner Ogilvie Sherman couples.
West Concord chaplain Reverend Robert Burt of the Massachusetts Reformatory was guest speaker at the Highland Congregational church Women's Guild in Lowell. His address centered on supervision of delinquents.
Kent Ohio reports tree expert Martin L. Davey Jr notes hemlock trees act as first aid for wildlife. Muskrats and bears use hemlock gum on open wounds as a dressing to keep out dirt and infection.
From the United States Government formation through March 3, 1871, the U S Government entered into 371 treaties with American Indian tribes.
West Concord three youths were injured in a New Year’s Eve collision on Main Street Route 62 at 2 30. William Oldengquist 21 of Peter Spring Road driver of one car Richard L Chadwick 18 Tower Road South Lincoln operator of the other car and John Mayo 17 Lewis Street South Lincoln passenger of Chadwick were taken to Emerson Hospital. Chadwick said he backed from a driveway when struck. Mayo was kept overnight and released Saturday night Oldenquist remained in hospital Monday in satisfactory condition all three injuries are back related Patrolman Leo Daigle and Special Officer Edward Doyle investigated
Concord reports that Kevin Grennan Curtis Peterson Joan Lord and Janet Magoon are among candidates from 300 schools for the American Field Service trip overseas this summer. A faculty committee selected these entrants hoping one will earn the honor.
Concord Lions Club opens 1955 with a supper meeting on Tuesday January 12 at 6 30 pm at Howard Johnsons. President Robert Lortz presides as District 33 committee presents a program. A delegation may attend the Worcester midwinter conference on January 15.
Concord Massachusetts announces that Mary A Foster of 15 Potter Street has passed her registered nurse examination. A Concord High School and Newton-Wellesley Hospital School of Nursing graduate, she is the daughter of Police Sergeant and Mrs John T Foster and was affiliated with Children's Hospital and Massachusetts State Department facilities.
Russell Linstrom of Alcott road reported his 1954 car taken on Arlington street Watertown last Wednesday afternoon. In a Lexington chase one youth escaped while the other, David Downie 19 of Somerville, was captured near Hancock and Adams streets after racing around the Battle Green twice. Downie charged with larceny of an automobile. partner to be sent to Watertown for theft charges.
Concord Miss Polly Anderson daughter of Mr and Mrs Carl Anderson of Virginia road and piano pupil of Mrs Davis S Huston will play at the Woman's Club meeting Monday January 10 at the Girl Scout House. She will perform Gavotte from the 5th French Suite J S Bach Moment Musical Franz Schubert and Aufschwang. Guest speaker Gordon A Gaskill former Concord librarian speaks on Behind the Scenes at the Library. Mrs E Clifford Goodpeed to preside tea hosted by Mrs Harold Tompkins.
Concord committee met Monday evening with Chairman Winthrop H. Lee presiding to conduct routine business. A Saturday meeting will discuss the superintendent position as more than 30 applications await to fill the vacancy caused by Radcliffe Morrill’s resignation who will move to Pelham New York next July.
The Concord Recreation Commission resumes Friday and Saturday afternoon screenings featuring a feature film and Rin Tin Tin. Friday shows at Harvey Wheeler School start at 2 45 p.m. and Saturday at the high school at 2 p.m. All children in the community are welcome.
