On Sunday January 8 at 10 45 Rev Dr Rob ert Wood Coe executive secretary of the American Bible Society will preach at West Concord Union Church. A former Leyden Congregational pastor in Brookline he joins Mrs Coe at the parsonage after worship. Members and friends invited to attend the morning service.
Concord attorney George F Fingold will be guest speaker at the Trinitarian Congregational Church Men's Club meeting Friday at 6 30 p m in the parish house after supper. A Robert MacLeod Jr is president and will preside. This is the first meeting of 1950.
Concord's James J. Mansfield Post No 158 will hold a regular meeting at the Veterans Building on Wednesday night January 11 at 8 o'clock. Commander Davis B. Williams will preside and plans include joint meetings with nearby posts and participation in the Concord Fight anniversary on April 19.
Bedford appoints Joslin to fill the vacancy from W Albert Adams resignation due to transfer to New York with Lever Brothers of Cambridge. Joslin, 30 North Road, is a family man with six children and has served on committees including planning additional school facilities.
Concord hosts Mr. and Mrs. John B. Kurtz of Lexington road with holiday guests over the weekend. Their sons Dale Kurtz and family of Cleveland Ohio and Richard Kurtz and family of Rochester New York joined them.
The first alarm of 1950 was sounded on Tuesday at 3 10 AM for a chimney fire at a Lexington road home. Box 24 dispatched the call.
Thom as P. McCusker, former superintendent of the Massachusetts Reformatory, is named chief secretary to Boston Mayor John B. Hynes. He served briefly here in late 1946 and early 1947, appointed by Gov Maurice Tobin, and was later replaced by Supt. John C. Dolan. He filled the vacancy after Maj. Michael J. Dee died. McCusker is married with nine children.
Concord Grange P of H met at Peter Bulkeley School Tuesday night led by master Mrs. Alice O Brien. Mrs. Madeline DeMars supervised a musical program. refreshments followed. Next Concord meeting set for January 17 with Middlesex Central Pomona meeting January 18 at Weston Town Hall where fifth degree will be given.
Concord council No 287 held a supper at Monument Hall with about 50 members in attendance. Past Grand Knight E E Mara and Ener Peachey led the supper. Grand Knight John B Finigan presided at the business session. Guest speaker Henry Tiedeman, field representative of the Social Security Board of Waltham, spoke to members.
Misses Sybil and Isobel White report the death of their brother Sergeant Joseph E. White at Lowrey Air Base Colorado on January 1 He was a Maynard High School Class 34 graduate served in the South Pacific during the war and later re enlisted in the U S Army Lowrey Base was his first assignment He is survived by his wife and three children in California Funeral services will be in Hawthorne California with burial in Englewood California
Concord golfer Cal Geary the 1948 Concord Country Club champion played in the holiday golf tournament at Wolaston Golf Club. He shot 77-72 for a total six behind the winner and was Concord’s sole participant in the event.
Elizabeth Catella of Shelburne Vermont amazed by first teeth appearing at about one week old. Reports from local observers note unusual early teething in the infant.
Concord honors Supt. of Schools Ralph D. McLeary and his wife at a surprise party held by teachers and friends at the Marlboro Country Club. Guests included state education officials and Harvard attendees. They reside at 390 Main Street West Concord.
Elbert W. Clark married Miss Arlette E. Hriniak at Sudbury Methodist Church on December 31 with 65 guests present. Rev. Robert K. Jones Jr. officiated as white gladioli and asters decor dotted the altar. The couple left for New Hampshire after a reception at the McManus restaurant.
The regular monthly meeting of Corinthian Lodge A F and A M is set for the Masonic Temple in Concord next Monday night January ninth at eight. Worshipful Master Donald Spooner of Lincoln will preside. Refreshments will be served after the meeting.
Concord Fire Department logged 174 alarms for 1949, 12 more than 1948. The peak was 238 alarms in 1947, with dry summer noted as a factor and praised by residents for improvements. Chief Harry E. Tut is cited regarding the year’s total.
Bedford Grange reconvened Thursday in Town Hall with Mrs Leila M Blake presiding. Past Master Richard D Powderly’s Executive Board seat was accepted as vacant and Robert Brand selected to fill it. Powderly’s term begins under Marshal Harry Rogers with Howard Davis assisting.
Bedford-Walter Gibbs, age 86, died at his daughter Mrs. Charles S. Hume’s home on Burlington Road. Born in Bourne, he was buried after a funeral at Wright Funeral Home. Rev. Frank W. Thompson officiated, with interment in Shawheen cemetery. he left two brothers Edward Gibbs of Hyannis and John Gibbs of Sagamore.
Concord Miss Cynthia Cook daughter of Mr and Mrs Alber C Cook of 2 Thoreau Street has returned to classes at Radcliffe after spending the holidays with her parents.
Frederick P. Walkey director of the deCordova museum in Lincoln spoke at the Concord Rotary Club luncheon at Howard Johnson's. Casper J. Jenney Jr. introduced him. The club’s business session was led by President Morton Seavey. Ladies night announced for January 26 at 6 30. January program committee named with Smethurst Clark Duston and Flannery listed.
West Acton news notes that the Twelve Niners will hear Fred Gorman, ex industrial instructor at Charlestown State Prison, next Sunday. The club, following Rev. Thompson’s 1950 outline, plans many New Year projects. A bowling practice seen last Monday included Don Festus, Art Decker, Fritz Delschlegel, Frank Charter, Bud Prentiss, and the Boydens.
The Ladies Auxiliary of the James J. Mansfield Post A.L. will hold a Monday night meeting January 9 in the Legion Room of the Veterans Building. President Mrs Naomi will preside and plans for future activities will be discussed.
About 45 members and guests attended the Concord Board of Trade meeting at the Colonial Inn. Bert Welbourne of the U S Chamber of Commerce spoke on the 81st Congress and pending bills including Brannan II and federal aid to schools, noting potential costs and the national debt.
The Acton Woman's Club executive board met at Mrs. George Newton's home to finalize an open evening session on January 11 at 8 at Acton Central. Superintendent Whitman Pearson will join a panel with other regional high school figures for discussion.
