The Maynard fire department reports a very small loss in the past year with 37 alarms totaling 3650 in damage and 3265 in insurance. The annual report credits new apparatus and modernization for efficiency and notes horses used 200 days saving 600 for the highway department.
A Finnish Boys Club event at the church drew 125 attendees with a balanced program. The program included congregational singing, Bible reading by Rev. John Vaananen, a talk on Boys Work, violin and cornet solos, speeches by John Pinola and others, a club sketch Who is the Wise Man, a flower sale and quoits games, and closing remarks by the pastor with refreshments served.
Ash Wednesday began with 7 o'clock mass at St Bridget's Church and ashes distributed to adults and children. Evening services follow with litany sermon benediction and ashes distribution. Friday services at 7 30 include Stations of the Cross and benediction. Lenten services continue every Wednesday and Friday evenings throughout the season.
The annual guest day of the D A R Old Concord chapter was held at the First Parish Meeting House in Concord on Saturday afternoon. Hostesses included secretary Mrs. O S Fowler and board member Mrs. A L Morse, with several local members and guests listed by name.

H M S Pinafore performances feature Hazel Coolidge in the chorus in Concord. A cantata The Lady of Shalott will be presented at Universal Church featuring Mrs. Alice W Weeks as soloist and Miss Margaret Cummings of Waltham as lecturer with the SalIat church choir Thursday night.
Joseph McMahon spent the weekend in Bedford. Frank Davis is seriously ill at his home on South Street. Norman Torrey visited relatives in Bedford. St Michael's church held services tonight for Ash Wednesday. The Skene Hatchery issued a circular on Custom Hatching. Thomas Butler added a Wyandotte rooster from Port Dover Ontario. Walter Hansen disposed of household effects and plans to move to the Midwest. Boston and Maine surveyors worked locally all week. Miss Sadie Murray of Boston and Miss Mae Murray of Everett visited Bedford friends. Edward Walsh has resumed duties with the Boston club after recovery. St Michael's church held its annual reunion with old-time residents. Pfeiffer Patent Wrench is on the market. circulars issued and local hardware dealers carry the line.
A Feb 11 gathering at Mrs. A. E. Brown's home led to the formation of the Bedford Equal Suffrage League. Officers elected include President Mrs. B. C. Mason and Vice President Mrs. Wm. Balfour, with Mrs. Frank H. Clark as secretary and Mrs. Arthur Gowans as treasurer. Those desiring to join are asked to send their names.
Mrs Viola Foss Lawler recovers at home from a private Boston operation. J W Raymond hauled scenery for the Dramatic Club from Cambridge. Willow Rebekah lodge met Monday night before a masquerade. Mrs Ralph Holden hosted the Concord Charitable Society on Bedford Street. Marion Booth Kelley lectures on Government for the Citizenship group at Mrs B Brown's. The masquerade at Junction drew many locals. Miss Abbie Nicholson and Miss Margaret O Connell visited the Raymond home. New telephone directories aid Central operators and subscribers after the system change. Indoor rifle range shooting by Company I paused due to rifles going out of service. Alderman Harry Phillips spoke on Christianity and War at Trinity Church. Jessie Wilson leaves Concord for Texas with family escort to Boston. Delta Phi members at BU see her off at North Station with cheers. The wedding date for the bride is pending Dallas arrival.
Leon Roundy and family relocated to Billerica where Roundy works in the B and M shop. Mrs. William Fought remained in Deaconess hospital after a severe stomach illness. Ash Wednesday services were held at Help of Christians church with Lenten services planned for Friday at 7 45 PM. A minor strike at the B and B laundry troubled the week but was resolved to resume work Monday.
A large audience filled every seat for the second Kitchen Orchestra concert. Changes included a quartet performing Juanita and a Thai step dance. Miss Hale led with skilled directing and singing while Mrs. C P O Connell drew laughter. Dancing lasted until 1 o clock with the Hyperian orchestra providing music. Guests from Concord and Maynard attended after intermission.
The 20th annual convention of the Middlesex Local Christian Endeavor Union will be held at Union Church on Monday with afternoon and evening sessions. The theme is Christian Service and a supper will be served by the local society to visiting delegates. Attendance is expected to be large.
