Private services were held Friday at Forest Hills crematory. Concord High plans a debating match with Wellesley at the local school auditorium. Lieutenant Charles F. Tolman formerly of Concord commanded the submarine Spearfish loaded with torpedoes at Newport Naval Base before a west coast shakedown.
Monday evening at the Masonic hall the Corinthian Lodge A F and A M held a ceremony with Worshipful Master Ronald MacKenzie officiating.
Concord residents learn of recent officer elections for the Concord Antiquarian Society with Allen French named president and a full slate of officers including Yvonny F. Smith as vice president and Russell H. Kette as vice president, plus secretary, treasurer, and several directors. A nominating committee is named with Miss Martha Chase and two married members.
Fred Boyd, Merit Badge Counselor on Leathercraft and Concord Lincoln District committee chair, spoke to Troop 49 during Boy Scout Anniversary Week. The Eagle Patrol demonstrated while history of Scouting was read by Paul Larrabee and Joseph Wheeler. Leaders present included George A. Hill, Daniel F. Wiles, and Charles R. Voigt. Eagle Patrol Leader Peter Harwood. Senior Scouts met at Robert Voigt’s home to plan leadership and advancement with several planning Board of Review appearances on April 2 for rank advancement and Specialization Badges.
Mrs. Edward B. Caiger and Miss McCoy coordinate a sewing plan at Contory high school using student donations from Concord and West Concord. Sixteen dresses for two year old girls are in progress, with layettes planned, as Red Cross charity strengthens community ties.
Mrs Benjamin L Smith led with 56 points to win the weekly women’s end‑v‑ey bowling tournament at the state armory on Wednesday afternoon under Pete Pratt. Other scores included Mrs Richard F Wood 51 and Mrs Edwin D Frooks 46.
Miss Mary V Dee formerly of Concord and longtime housekeeper at St Paul's Rectory Wellesley died after a short illness at St Elizabeth's Hospital Brighton. Born March 18 1891 in Concord she was daughter of the late John Dee and his wife. A high mass was held at St Paul's Church Wellesley and burial followed at St Bernard's Cemetery Concord. Surviving are two brothers and four sisters including Joseph Dee of Concord Richard Dee of Wellesley Mrs Charles Vaughan of Lexington Mrs Frank McCard of Medford Mrs Thomas G Lynch of Lexington and Mrs William Silk of West Concord.
Concords oldest meat cutter F Sargent received a surprise party at Andersons Market for his 80th birthday last Wednesday afternoon. Born February 7 in Littleton, he lives in South Acton with a family including daughters in Detroit and New Connecticut and a son in West Concord.
The Concord Legion band forfeits rehearsal night to back the Concord Players in presenting City Town by the Lynn players at Veterans Building on Tuesday evening. Next Legion rehearsal scheduled for Friday evening at the same time and place.
Funeral services for James Nagle were held from his sister’s home in West Concord with a high Mass at Our Lady Help of Christians Church. Nagle, born July 4 1849 in Ireland, died early Thursday at his daughter’s home in Winchester after a long illness. He lived in West Concord over 50 years, served as selectman and postmaster, taught at the Reformatory, and was active in the Village Improvement Association. Surviving are his sister Mrs. Joseph Smith, daughter Mrs. Carleton, three sisters, eight grandchildren, and three great grandchildren.
Emerson Hospital in Concord reports a busy January with 87 admitted and 86 discharged. The daily average stayed at 26.6 for January 1940, up from 20.09 in January 1939. Surgical and obstetric cases were recorded, including 20 obstetric cases and 56 total births.
Belmont High girls basketball defeated Concord 41 to 12 on Belmont’s home floor. Concord suffered a second straight loss after previous defeats by Action and Watertown. In the other game the Red and White team lost 22 to 21. Next they travel to Arlington Thursday to face the Arlington girls sextet.
A benefit event in the Veterans building next Sunday evening February 18 at 8 o'clock features Marti K. Bovey presenting color films of a 23 day trout fishing expedition in Northern Ontario and Bert C. Chamberts colored stills of New England countryside. A short Finnish music program directed by Mrs. D. Ripley Gage will accompany the show.
In Boston at the Badminton and Tennis Club courts, the Favershams Jr. William and wife defeated Harold Seavey and Clarriet Nichols to claim the annual mixed doubles crown for a second year running. The consolation event was won by Mrs Te Srock Cucine and Leonard Sth who had been eliminated earlier.
Daniel S Wilson, born January 1 1880 in Norway Maine, a former West Concord resident and MIT 1903 graduate, died last Tuesday in Cambridge. He was an electrical engineer for many years. Survived by wife Pauline Sanborn Wilson of Cambridge, two sons Arnold D Wilson of West Concord and Stanley Wilson of Honolulu, sister Mrs Anton A Saunders of Maynard, and a grandson. Interment at Sleepy Hollow Cemetery following funeral at his sister’s home on Lowell Road.
Mrs Ruth Payson Wheeler wife of Raymond Wheeler of Plainfield died Thursday night at Emerson Hospital after a long illness. She was active in many clubs and organizations and is survived by her husband, her father Alberto Payson, three sons, and two brothers. Funeral plans are pending with a probable Friday service at First Parish Church and burial in Sleepy Hollow cemetery.
In Concord District court Judge Howard A. Wilson found Michael A. Tero of Lexington guilty on two complaints and sentenced him to the state farm. He appealed in both counts and was ordered held in 200 dollars surety for appearance before East Cambridge court in March. He was arrested in Lexington on February 11 for drunkenness and causing damage to the town office building.
The regular meeting of the Woman's Union of the Trinitarian Congregational church is set for Thursday at 3 p.m. in the Parish House. Rev. Wilfred H. Bunker will be the guest speaker and tea will be served.
Leominster reports total appropriations of 1,203,060.75 dollars submitted to the city council last night as part of the annual budget process under Mayor Bell.
Harry A Chandler aged 79 died suddenly while visiting his daughter Mrs Estelle M Benoit on Old Marlboro Road West Concord. Born August 2 1860 in Chandlerville Iowa he worked on a town farm then at Talbot Mills North Billerica and later with Boston and Maine Rail road rising to station agent at South Lowell. Survived by daughter Mrs Benoit another daughter Mrs Grace O Davidson a son Walter H Chandler and widow Julia F Chandler. Burial was in Hillside Cemetery Westford after services at the son’s home.
The Lincoln Day program at the Junior High Assembly in Concord featured Miss Maud Findeisen directing a dramatic reading The Perfect Tribute with an 8th grade choral Gettysburg Address and a 7th grade Oh Captain My Captain rendition The Governor's Proclamation was read by Miss Minna Findeisen George Erickson Middlesex County Club Agent announced two Massachusetts Horticultural Society awards John Merrick won a blue ribbon for his flower garden and Joseph Wheeles earned a bronze medal for his vegetable and flower gardens.
Faculty manager Al Cook and volunteers began dismantling the new high school hockey rink at the town forest amid a thaw risking damage to the ice. Tufts track member Humphrey Hosmer and Dartmouth captain Percy Rideout starred in recent winter sports events. Middlesex and St Mark's canceled their season finale due to warm weather. Middlesex won four of seven games. Concord Hockey Club endures mild temperatures causing postponed games and winter woes for Briss Maseve and the club.
Mrs Henry W Parmenter at 68 Newton Street hosted Rambler Circle with her daughter Mrs Roland Coddze assisting. Twelve members attended a luncheon and a brief business meeting voted funds for new cyminals for the Methodist church and discussed vestry and kitchen repairs.
Concord supporters honored Splaine during a Boston Olympica Ques bec Hockey game at Boston Garden. Eddie Boreson, Concord committee chair, presented a traveling bag to Splaine on behalf of admirers, and Bill’s mother received flowers as the crowd cheered their longtime beneficiary.
Concord reports two young prospects named Josehiam and Adjiton were convicted of larceny for stealing a sewing machine from Iver gon of South Street on January 22. They promised repairs but sold the machine in Lawrence for two dollars, receiving one dollar fifty and fifty cents respectively. Each was sentenced to six months in the House of Correction, held on $1,000 surety, and remanded to East Cambridge jail. Police from Lawrence Methuen and Haverhill served warrants following the trial.
Marlboro Rev. David W. Naton rector of Holy ite church reports to police that a car window was smashed on Cotswold Street Brookline. Two suitcases containing vestments and ceremonial robes were taken from the vehicle.
In a midweek clash at Concord Wakefield edged the hosts 37 to 30. Concord captain Pauli Moynihan led with 17 points but Wakefield's defense and timely plays secured the win. The setback keeps Concord near the bottom of the league standings with only a couple of victories this season.
John Costellow of 9 Midland Road suffered a fractured leg while working at the city gravel pit off Robin Hood Road. He was treated yesterday afternoon at Marlboro Hospital by Dr. Charles Ayer of Worcester.
