The Concord School Committee invites Thoreau Wheeler district residents to a Monday 8 p.m. meeting in Thoreau School auditorium. Citizens may request an audience to discuss policy, with sessions planned for 8:10 to 9 p.m. and topics including budget allocations and junior high construction plans.
Concord police report two electricians at Richardson Drug Co on Main street left with 200 cartons of cigarettes before they were missed. Theodore M. Nelson appoints a three member committee to study merit awards for town employees. Members are Harry S. Martin of welfare, Cornelia M. Lawrence town clerk, and Dorothy Nyren librarian.
Public hearing slated in Wells A Hall Memorial Auditorium February 14 at 8 p.m. to discuss an 18 000 square foot addition behind the school auditorium. The project targets six new classrooms five science labs with cost estimates to be prepared by Bas telle Halsey Associates and includes a gallery corridor linking the new wing to the existing building. A second public hearing is set for February 26 to outline the plans and financing.
Concord selectmen grant common victualler license to F. W. Woolworth and Nashawtuc Country Club. Willow Pond Kitchen application for a Sunday entertainment jukebox denied.
At a meeting led by Loring on enlarged maps, residents debated R-4 versus A-4 zoning with concerns over water supply and sewage, questioned large lot increases to 40000 and 80000 square feet, and discussed health standards and master plan alignment. Several favored one acre zoning while others urged review before town meeting with 16 related articles on the warrant.
Concord reports Dr. Joseph M. Haggerty elected chairman of the Chamber of Commerce professional committee at a noonday seminar. Dr. Mark D. Elliott directed the gathering and outlined civic duties and upcoming projects. Other committee members present included Drs. Dillon McDonald Nahigian and Voigt, with President Sheehan and Exec. Sec. Erickson in attendance.
Alexander Sergeant a 21 year old Wetherbee Regular is promoted from patrolman to sergeant effective yesterday after a recommendation by Chief James Finan Jr. He will replace Martin S. Yaw on the swing shift from 1 am to 9 am. Leonard J. Wetherbee is promoted from special officer to patrolman. Alexander lives at 42 Elsinore Street with wife and four children. he served in the U.S. Air Force August 1954 and attended municipal officers training. Wetherbee, a West Concord resident, previously worked at a hardware store and served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He is married to Ann Byron and has four sons.
1961 welfare payments show total spending of 106200.92 with 85384.26 from state and federal aid. Net cost to the town is 20816.66, representing 19.6 percent of total costs.
Norman J. MacLeod challenges incumbent Chairman George W. Foss for selectman while Doreen I. Young withdraws, opening the planning board contest to Prof. T. William Lamb. The March 5 election will feature two contests among three caucus nominees.
Acton selectmen met Tuesday evening with building inspector Albert Foster wire inspector Leslie Park and streets superintendent Allen Nelson to discuss departmental matters.
